Utrecht make Europa; Willem II survive; Excelsior promoted at Spata’s expense; Porto win cup

Utrecht 4 – Roda 1 (Agg. 6-1) (Eredivisie play-off second-leg, May 16, 2010) Utrecht already held a 2-0 advantage from the first leg and two goals from both Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Jacob Mulenga ensured a comfortable afternoon. Mads Junker struck a first-half equaliser to give Roda brief hope, but that was extinguished along with Davy de Fauw’s expulsion four minutes after halftime.

Willem II 3 – Go Ahead Eagles 0 (Agg. 3-1) (Eredivisie relegation play-off second-leg, May 16, 2010) Frank Demouge’s 27th minute strike put Willem II 1-0 up after 90 minutes and Mehmet Akgun scored after 99 and 115 minutes (first & second) to ensure survival.

Sparta 1 – Excelsior 1 (Agg. 1-1) (Eredivisie relegation play-off second-leg, May 16, 2010) Excelsior booked their place in the Eredivisie and relegated city rivals Sparta Rotterdam in the process. Guyon Fernandez had missed an 86th minute penalty for Excelsior, but turned from villain to hero with the decisive strike. Rydell Poepon put Sparta ahead in the second minute of stoppage time, but 60 seconds later Fernandez struck to earn a 1-1 draw which secured Excelsior’s promotion following the 0-0 draw in the first leg.

Chaves 1 – Porto 2 (Taca de Portugal, May 16, 2010) Porto were cruising early on in the cup final after Fredy Guarin and Falcao established a 2-goal lead for the favourites. Clemente’s late goal for Chaves proved mere consolation, and the match ended on a sour note after Ricardo Rocha and Bruno Alves both saw red.
