Twente & PSV stay on top in Holland; Suarez claims quads for Ajax; Benfica win; Last-gasp Anderlecht beat Brugge in 5-goal thriller

FC Twente 2 – Heracles 0 (Eredivisie, February 3, 2010) Title hopeful FC Twente struck just before the break at home with Heracles, Perez flicked on a free-kick to Bryan Ruiz and the striker drilled a low shot into the far corner. A horrendous defensive blunder in the visitors defence gifted Blaise NKufo the second for Steve McClaren’s men.

PSV 2 – Utrecht 1 (Eredivisie, February 3, 2010) PSV struck after six minutes against Utrecht when the new Zlatan, Ola Toivonen, crashed home a left wing cross on the volley. But the lead was short lived as Sander Keller bundled home a set play to bring the visitors level. PSV retook the lead after the break when defensive midfielder Orlando Engelaar curled a rare beauty into the top corner.

Ajax 4 – Roda 0 (Eredivisie, February 3, 2010) An early second half Luis Suarez penalty put Ajax in front against Roda. Suarez bagged hos second of the game with another penalty in the 69th minute and 10 minutes later Suarez sealed his hat-trick and put the game to bed. The Uruguayan Suarez then made it a night to remember claiming an incredible fourth and leave him on course to break scoring records this season at Ajax.

FC Groningen 2 – ADO Den Haag 0 (Eredivisie, February 3, 2010) Goals in either half by Andreas Granqvist and Danny Holla guided Groningen to their fourth home win of the season as they further established themselves in mid-table by beating Den Haag.


Benfica 3 – Leiria 0 (Liga Sagres, February 3, 2010) Oscar Cardozo opened the scoring on 10 minutes. The seconding off of Silas for Leiria six minutes later meant second half goals from Javier Saviola and Ruben Amorim wrapped up the victory with a fine right-footed strike from distance.

Antalyaspor 2 – Galatasaray 1 (Turkish Cup, February 3, 2010) Arda Turan gave Gala a 10th minute lead from a corner but Serge Djiehoua and Necati Ates turned the match in Antalyaspor’s favour before the break.

Istanbul Buyuksehir 1 – Trabzonspor 1 (Turkish Cup, February 3, 2010) The hosts took the lead in controversial circumstances on the half hour when Mustafa Kose was adjudged to have steered the ball over the line despite the hosts having several clear-cut opportunities to convincingly whack the ball in the net, but failing to do so. The visitors salvaged a late draw from the cup tie as Hrvoje Cale struck two minutes from time for Trabzonspor.


Anderlecht 3 – Club Brugge 2 (Jupiler League, February 3, 2010) Defender Roland Juhasz gave Anderlecht the lead inside five minutes, but goals either side of half-time from Vadis Odjija Ofoe and Rostand Kouemaha put Brugge 2-1 up. The sending-off of visiting substitute Ronald Vargas turned the game back in the hosts’ favour. Another substitute, Nicolas Frutos, levelled within three minutes of coming on before Mbark Boussoufa settled the match late on.

KV Mechelen 1 – Germinal Beerschot 0 (Jupiler League, February 2, 2010) Mechelen moved above Germinal into fifth place as substitute Yoni Buyens, who came on as a 64th minute substitute for Kevin Beudens, netted the only goal with 12 minutes remaining.
