VIDEO: Fabianski fails as Arsenal lose 2-1 in Porto; Controversial Klose winner leads Bayern over Fiorentina

Porto 2 – Arsenal 1 (Champions League, February 17, 2010) (Longer ITV highlights here.) Arsenal started badly in Porto finding themselves under the cosh from the get-go, Hulk dragging a shot wide after just two minutes. The Gunners were made to look silly in the 11th minute when Silvestre Varela skipped past Clichy down the right and whacked a cross goalwards that stand-in keeper Lukasz Fabianski horribly turned into his own net. Arsenal grabbed the crucial away goal in the 16th minute from the most unlikely source. Vermaelen flicked on a Nasri corner to the back post, Rosicky knocked the ball back into the mixer, and Sol Campbell was perfectly placed to nod the ball over the line. (First half highlights here.) Arsenal conceded a bizarre goal at the start of the second half to caused by Campbell’s needless touch on the ball that Fabianski stupidly picked up to give away an indirect free-kick. Porto took it quickly and Raul Meireles touched the ball to Falcao who scored. Cesc Fabregas appeared to be hit by a missile when trying to take corner.

After the game a clearly irate Arsene Wenger and Cesc Fabregas gave their thoughts on Arsenal’s defeat.

Bayern Munich 2 – Fiorentina 1 (Champions League, February 17, 2010) (Longer ITV highlights here.) Bayern took the lead against Fiorentina on the stroke of halftime courtesy of an Arjen Robben penalty – the Dutchman’s sixth goal in six consecutive games. The Viola bagged a crucial away goal at the start of the second half to equalise, poor Bayern defending allowed a corner to go unchallenged into their box and Per Kroldrup helped himself to the charity and slotted the ball home. In the 89th minute Bayern netted a crucial but controversial winner as Robben’s long-range shot was parried out to Olic who nodded a ball onto an offside Miroslav Klose to head in.
