Unirea Urziceni 1 – Liverpool 3 (aggregate 1 – 4)  (Europa League, February 25, 2010) A disastrous start for Liverpool as  Fernandes rose completely unmarked from a corner to power a header past Pepe Reina. It didn’t take long for the Reds to equalize, eleven minutes to be precise. Unirea failed to clear their lines and the ball dropped to Mascherano who smacked a scorcher from 25 yards out into the back of the net. The goal-fest continued when a Steven Gerrard free-kick dropped to Ryan Babel at the back post and he prodded in. 10 minutes after the break Yossi Benayoun teed up Steven Gerrard who drilled a low shot past the unsighted keeper.

Shakhtar Donetsk 1 – Fulham 1 (aggregate 2 – 3) (Europa League, February 25, 2010) 33 minutes in Damien Duff curled over an inswinging free-kick from the right and Brede Hangeland rose to nod into the bottom corner of the net. The home team pulled one back when Douglas Costa crossed for Rodrigues Jadson to slot home.

Sporting Lisbon 3 – Everton 0 (aggregate 4 – 2) (Europa League, February 25, 2010) First half highlights can be seen here. In the second half Veloso sprang the offside trap and beat Tim Howard with a low shot into the corner of the net. Sporting extended their lead after Tim Howard saved from Liedson, the rebound fell to Mendes who lashed a low shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection on its way in. With Everton chasing the game a Phil Neville shot was blocked and Sporting broke quickly down field, Djalo set up Fernandez for his second of the game.

PSV 3 – Hamburg 2 (aggregate 3 – 3) (Europa League, February 25, 2010) The home side took an early lead through a second minute goal by Ola Toivonen. PSV doubled their lead two minutes before half-time with a great free kick from Balazs Dzsudzsak. 35 yards out and he blasts the ball into the top right hand corner. Hamburg went forward and their attacking play was rewarded with goals from Petric and a penalty from Trochowski (both goals can bee seen here). PSV wrapped the game up in the last minute with a goal from Koevermans.

Anderlecht 4 – Athletic Bilbao 0 (aggregate 5 – 1) (Europa League, February 25, 2010) The Belgian side went ahead in the fifth minute with wonder kid Romelo Lukaku grabbing an early goal. Anderlecht doubled their lead 20 minutes later through Moubarak Boussoufa. Juhasz and Legear completed the rout for the home side.

Roma 2 – Panathinaikos 3 (aggregate 4 – 6) (Europa League, February 25, 2010) John Arne Riise put the Giallorossi in front after twelve minutes. The Greeks struck back with three goals in a crazy five minutes before half time, Cisse got two (see here and here) and Ninis scored the other. Roma pulled one back through de Rossi with 20 minutes remaining.

Marseille 3 – FC Copenhagen 1 (aggregate 6 – 2)  (Europa League, February 25, 2010) Hatem Ben Afra put Marseille ahead two minutes before half-time. Kone added a second and a third for the French team. Almedia scored a consolation goal for the visitors.

With the game tied at one apiece at the end of full time, extra time was necessary. Hernandez made the break through for the Spaniards in the first half of extra time and completed his brace in the second half.

Werder Bremen 4 – FC Twente 1 (aggregate 4 – 2) (Europa League, February 25, 2010) Steve Maclaren’s side fell behind to three quick goals before pulling one back. Pizarro scored two (see here and here), Naldo added a third before Jong pulled one back for the visitors. Pizarro completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute.

Wolfsburg 4 – Villarreal 1(aggregate 6 – 3) (Europa League, February 25, 2010) The German’s were two goals to the good thanks to Dezko and an own goal from Angel. Capdevilla pulled one back for the visitors but Gertner made it three for the home team just before half time. Grafite put the home side four up in the second half.

Fenerbache 1 – Lille 1 (aggregate 2 – 3) (Europa League, February 25, 2010) Belozoglu put the Turks one up after 35 minutes. Lille equalised when Rami rose to nod in a free kick with five minutes to go.
