VIDEO: Bayern comeback from the brink to knock out Manchester United; Lyon progress after 1-0 Bordeaux loss

Manchester United 3 – Bayern Munich 2* (Agg. 4-4) (Champions League quarter-final second-leg, April 7, 2010) (Extended ITV highlights here.) With Wayne Rooney incredibly in the starting line-up, United came racing out the traps against Bayern scoring after just three minutes when Wazza laid off a pass to Darron Gibson 25-yards out and the Irishman smashed a low swerving shot past Butt. Three minutes later Old Trafford erupted after a goal of pure genius, Antonio Valencia teased left-back Badstuber before eventually picking out Luis Nani in the box who scored with a Zola-esque backheel flick into the far corner. A fabulous first half for the Red Devils was completed when they claimed a third five minutes from the break, Valencia was freed down the right from a throw-in and, after he took a perfect touch inside, he picked out Luis Nani at the back post who scored with a first-time shot. But then Bayern pooped the party, Muller headed a cross field ball into the mixer, Ivica Olic muscled Carrick out the way and the Croatian struck a low shot into the far corner. Five minutes after the break United went down to ten men, Rafael collecting a (harsh?) second yellow card for tug on Ribery. 15 minutes from time Bayern moved into pole position with a brilliant training ground corner routine, Ribery floated a ball to Arjen Robben on the edge of the box and the Dutchman cracked a volley into the corner.

Directly after the game Sir Alex Ferguson referred to Bayern’s players as “typical Germans” in his post match interview, while a more calm reaction from Fergie came during his press conference with the media (watch here). There were also interviews with Luis Nani, Edwin Van Der Sar and Darron Gibson.

Bordeaux 1 – Lyon 0 (Agg. 2-3) (Champions League quarter-final second-leg, April 7, 2010) Trailing 3-1 from the first leg, Bordeaux set-up a win-or-bust second half with Lyon when they struck on the stroke of halftime as Tremoulinas chugged down the left and slapped the ball across the face of goal where Arsenal-bound Marouane Chamakh stretched out his leg to poke it into the net from four yards.
