VIDEO: Atletico Madrid, Lyon, Zurich, Debrecen & Haifa qualify for the Champions League group stages; Shakhtar ease past Sivasspor in the Europa League

Atletico Madrid 2 – Panathinaikos 0 (Agg. 5-2) (Champions League, August 25, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Panathinaikos defender Loukas Vintra turned the ball into his own net from a Diego Forlan cut back in the fifth minute. Sergio Aguero completed the win with a goal late on.

Anderlecht 1 – Lyon 3 (Agg. 2-8) (Champions League, August 25, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Lisandro Lopez capitalised on some awful defending to lob the keeper for Lyon’s opener on 26 minutes. Lopez scored the second six minutes later and then completed his first-half hat-trick before the break with probably the best goal of the three. Matias Suarez pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after the interval.

Zurich 2 – Ventspils 1 (Agg. 5-1) (Champions League, August 25, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Johan Vonlanthen’s second goal of the tie put Zurich 4-up on aggregate after just six minutes, Igor Tigirlas equalised two minutes later. Almen Abdi’s late header secured Zurich’s win on the night.

Debrecen 2 – Levski Sofia 0 (Agg. 4-1) (Champions League, August 25, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) After winning the away leg 2-1, Debrecen went further ahead in the tie at home to Levski Sofia when Jozsef Varga produced a fine curling finish. Gergely Rudolf doubled the lead with a stunning strike that arrowed into the top corner. (First-half highlights here.)

Maccabi Haifa 3 – RB Salzburg 0 (Agg. 5-1) (Champions League, August 25, 2009) Vladimir Dvalishvili put Haifa 3-1 ahead on aggregate at home to RB Salzburg just after the half hour. Eyal Golasa doubled Haifa’s lead in the second half. Muhammad Gadir grabbed the third late on.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2 – Sivasspor 0 (Agg. 5-0) (Europa League, August 25, 2009) Dario Srna won a debatable penalty on the edge of the Sivasspor box after 20 minutes and Jadsen stepped up to put Shakhtar ahead from the spot. Another penalty from Adriano, after Srna had been fouled in the box again, just before the hour mark completed the win and left Shakhtar to concentrate on Friday’s clash with Barcelona.
