Celtic 1 – Manchester United 1 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Cristiano Ronaldo saw his early free-kick rise just over the bar, but the mood at Parkhead erupted in the 13th minute as Scott McDonald produced a brilliant finish to lob stand-in United keeper Ben Foster. United cranked up the pressure after the break, Vidic sent a header off target. And after dominating the play for the majority of the second half, United were finally rewarded when Ryan Giggs bundled home a header after Boruc had palmed away Ronaldo’s swerving shot.

Arsenal 0 – Fenerbahce 0 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Robin van Persie missed a hat-trick of first half chances, the third opportunity forcing a fine save from Demirel (who was in inspired form all night). The Gunners continued to have the upper hand in the second half but they couldn’t find the breakthrough despite dominating the possession.

Real Madrid 0 – Juventus 2 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Alessandro Del Piero continued his excellent recent form at the Santiago Bernabeu by firing in a 20-yard low drive to give Juve the lead in Madrid. Sergio Ramos had a glorious chance to cap his return to the first team with an equaliser, but his back-post volley narrowly skied the bar. Ruud van Nistelrooy was the next to miss the target after being released by Guti. Juventus then extended their lead after the break, Iker Casillas lined-up his wall poorly and Alessandro Del Piero was able to pick his spot to the right of the motionless keeper.

Fiorentina 1 – Bayern Munich 1 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Third-place Fiorentina, who were hosting group leaders Bayern Munich needing a win, made a great start as Adrian Mutu volleyed home Zauri’s cross after 10 minutes. Mutu had a wonderful opportunity to double the lead early in the second half, but the Romanian’s free header was sent over the bar. Bayern eventually drew level, Ribery’s through-ball was deflected into the path of Tim Borowski who stroked home the equaliser.

Dynamo Kiev 1 – Porto 2 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Artem Milevskiy’s first-time shot from Aliyev’s pass put Dynamo Kiev ahead against Porto. The Portuguese hit back after the break, Rolando rose powerfully to head home Raul Meireles’ free-kick. Porto snatched a dramatic victory in injury-time, Lopez crossed to Lucho Gonzalez who tucked home the winner, tore off his shirt off and received his second yellow card and marching orders.

BATE Borisov 0 – Zenit St. Petersburg 2 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Zenit seized the first half advantage at BATE through a Pavel Pogrebniak strike from inside the box. A wonderful late solo goal from Miguel Danny, weaving past the static defender before finding the back of the net, sealed victory for Zenit.

Aalborg 2 – Villarreal 2 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Villarreal took a halftime lead at Aalborg after Robert Pires played in Giuseppe Rossi, who cut in from the right and saw his left-footed shot deflect past Zaza in goal. The Yellow Submarine was breached early in the second half, Jeppe Curth levelling for the Danes with a blistering shot after a fine assist from Caca. But the Spaniards replied with a superb goal, Llorente chipped a ball through to Guillermo Franco, who controlled on his chest before scoring on the volley. Aalborg refused to lie down and rallied with the second superb goal of the game, Anders Due curling a free-kick into the top corner.

Lyon 2 – Steaua Bucharest 0 (Champions League, November 5, 2008) Steaua fell behind at Lyon as a result of shocking team defending, Juninho fired his free-kick straight through a porous wall, and keeper Zapata failed to stop the shot on the line. Anthony Reveillere sealed the win with a fine second nine minutes from time.
