VIDEO: Tevez double gives Manchester City the slim edge over United in the Carling Cup; Carlisle upset Leeds

Manchester City 2 – Manchester United 1 (Carling Cup semi-final first-leg, January 19, 2010) United struck first in the derby when a 16th minute cross from the right was played in from Valencia and, after Wayne Rooney’s effort was stopped by Given, Ryan Giggs was on hand to net his first derby goal since 1996. City levelled five minutes from the break courtesy of a debatable penalty (was it in the box?) when Rafael tugged at Bellamy, and Carlos Tevez thumped his spot-kick past Van der Sar. In the 65th minute City benefited from another moment of controversy when they won a corner in questionable circumstances, and from the set-play Zabaleta steered a header to Kompany who hooked a cross to the near post, where Carlos Tevez was prowling to stoop in his second.

Leeds 1 – Carlisle 2 (Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Area Final first-leg, January 19, 2010) Carlisle took the lead through a brilliant volley from Graham Kavanagh on 22 minutes. Leeds pulled level on 56 minutes when Jason Crowe ran in to nod home Andrew Hughes’ delivery. Joe Anyinsah’s 85th minute header gave Carlisle victory and the surprise upset at Elland Road.
