Manchester United 3 – Aston Villa 3 (Pens. 3-2) (Premier Reserve League Playoff final, May 3, 2010) Villa opened the scoring on 22 minutes when Barry Bannan found Nathan Delfouneso who spun his marker to fire into the bottom corner. Manchester United hit back on the stroke of half-time when Mame Biram Diouf beat Andy Marshall after racing on to a pass from last season’s Villa tormentor Macheda. Villa restored their lead on 55 minutes when Andreas Weimann crossed for Delfouneso to smash home a close-range finish. But again the Red Devils replied, this time just seven minutes later when Federico Macheda calmly converted a penalty after captain Corry Evans was fouled by Jonathan Hogg. Villa skipper Ciaran Clark thought he would get his hands on the trophy after getting his head on Albrighton’s corner to nod his team back in front on 81 minutes. But Mame Biram Diouf sent the epic tie to penalties when he scored an 88th minute equaliser with Macheda again the provider. Eventually the match went to penalties where Ben Foster became the shootout hero. The goalie made two crucial saves before he scored what proved to be the winning kick for United.
