VIDEO: Man City kill off Villa’s Champions League hopes; Hudd’s cracker keeps Spurs 4th; Brum & Pompey win; Stoke-Everton draw; Leeds lose at Charlton

Manchester City 3 – Aston Villa 1 (Premier League, May 1, 2010) (Longer highlights here, MOTD highlights here.) The City of Manchester Stadium fell silent after 15 minutes when a brilliant forward run and pass from Stewart Downing freed John Carew in the box and the bulky striker shot on the turn to beat Fulop between the sticks on his debut. City levelled from the spot after Warnock fouled Adam Johnson out wide near the byeline, with Carlos Tevez squeezing his penalty underneath Brad Friedel’s dive. Less than 90 seconds later City took the lead when Adam Johnson feed Emmanuel Adebayor in the six-yard box and the striker stroked the ball into the bottom right corner. Manchester City killed off the Midlander’s Champions League hopes with two minutes left on the clock as sub Wright-Phillips teed up Craig Bellamy through the middle and the Welshman curled a cracker into the top left corner.

Tottenham 1 – Bolton 0 (Premier League, May 1, 2010) (MOTD highlights here.) Spurs took a lead into the break at home to Bolton courtesy of a belter from Tom Huddlestone, Benoit Assou-Ekotto laid a pass off to the young Englishman and, after trying to score a thumper for much of the season, the midfielder whacked home a beauty into the top corner from 22-yards.

Birmingham 2 – Burnley 1 (Premier League, May 1, 2010) (MOTD highlights here.) Birmingham struck after 29 minutes against relegated Burnley when Cameron Jerome chested Sebastian Larsson’s cross towards goal only for Clarets keeper Brian Jensen to carry the ball over the line with his trailing leg for a messy own goal. The Blues doubled their advantage from a set play in the 41st, McFadden whipped over a free-kick from the right which Johnson headed back into the mixer at the far post and Chucho Benitez was on the spot to chest home from a yard out. Four minutes from time Burnley got on the scoresheet when Steven Thompson broke the offside trap and coolly finished past Joe Hart.

Portsmouth 3 -  Wolves 1 (Premier League, May 1, 2010) (MOTD highlights here.) An unmarked header from Aruna Dindane put the relegated FA Cup finalists after 20 minutes, but Wolves forward Kevin Doyle hit the back of the net to put his side back on level terms. However, strikes from John Utaka and Michael Brown saw the home side take away all three points.

Stoke 0 – Everton 0 (Premier League, May 1, 2010) (Longer highlights here, MOTD highlights here.) Everton’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Europa League are over after they were held to a goalless draw by Stoke.

Charlton 1 – Leeds 0 (League One, May 1, 2010) (MOTD highlights here.) Leeds blew their chance to seal automatic promotion to the Championship after Richard Naylor headed into his own net two minutes from time.


Bolton 1 – Manchester United 1 (Premier Academy League, May 1, 2010) Bottom of the table and on a run of five straight defeats, the Trotters rocked United with an early goal from Michael O’Halloran. A scrappy effort from Will Keane got the league leaders back on terms after only eight minutes in arrears, but despite and going close on a number of occasions, United couldn’t find the goal they needed to be crowned champions with a game to spare.
