Newcastle 0 – Arsenal 0: Gervinho red card on debut & bad-boy Barton

Newcastle 0 – Arsenal 0 (Premier League, August 13, 2011) (MOTD highlights) The Gunners had their first chance inside sixty seconds as Tomas Rosicky trickled an effort just wide of the upright. After 17 minute Arsenal shaved the post again as Robin van Persie skewed a shot wide after a game of ping-pong in the Magpies box. Laurent Koscielny had a header saved off the line while Van Persie missed a good chance late on as the first half ended goalless. (First half highlights) Arsenal continued to miss the target after the break as Robin van Persie watched his free-kick narrowly sky the bar. Alex Song was fortunate not to see red for a blatant stamp on Joey Barton that the ref seemed to miss. 15 minutes from time the match turned nasty as Gervinho picked up a straight red on his debut after he a) dived in the box while looking for a penalty and b) then getting into a spat with Joey Barton in which he raised his arms.
