Newcastle 2 – Aston Villa 0 (Premier League, November 3, 2008) After a goalless opening 60 minutes (first-half highlights here), Obafemi Martins opened the scoring with a quick turn and fine low finish past Freidel. The Toon played with a lot more confidence following the goal and Martins grabbed his second with eight minutes to go after good work by Gutierrez.
Bolton 2 – Manchester City 0 (Premier League, November 2, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) As Manchester City continued to under-perform away from home, the Reebok had to wait until 15 minutes from time to see the deadlock broken. Cahill fed in a cross from the right and Ricardo Gardner (offside) was able to direct the ball goalwards off the underside of the bar. The result was confirmed in the 88th minute as a fired up Gardner burst down the left and his cutback was turned into his own net by Richard Dunne. The win lifts Bolton off the foot of the table, with bottom-club Newcastle playing Aston Villa on Monday night.
Birmingham 0 – Coventry 1 (Championship, November 3, 2008) Clinton Morrison returned to his old club and scored the only goal of the game just after the break with a close range header.
Watford 3 – Blackpool 4 (Championship, November 1, 2008) Watford had led three times through Will Hoskins, Grzegorz Rasiak and Tommy Smith but Blackpool equalised each time with Keith Southern, Ben Burgess and Taylor-Fletcher scoring before Alan Gow‘s last-gasp effort, two minutes into injury-time, gave the Seasiders the win.
Cheltenham 0 – Leeds 1 (League One, November 1, 2008) A header from Luciano Becchio after only seven minutes was enough for Leeds to take the points.
