Manchester United make hard work of Pompey; A point for Everton kills Chelsea’s title dreams

Manchester United 2 – Portsmouth 0 (Premier League, April 22, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Manchester United made their intentions clear inside ten minutes, Anderson picked out Giggs (offside?) down the left, the Welsh wizard picked out Wayne Rooney in the box and the number 10 beat James with ease. United cranked up the pressure, Rooney and Anderson both going close to adding a second. Ryan Giggs was then found guilty of missing the target after Cristiano Ronaldo had put the ball on the Welshman’s plate. (First half highlights here.) After missing a hatful of chances, in the 82nd minute fate would have Paul Scholes – on his 600th United appearance – thread the through-ball into Michael Carrick who found the bottom corner to kill the game and send the Red Devils back to the top.

Chelsea 0 – Everton 0 (Premier League, April 22, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Jo forced a confidence boosting save out of Petr Cech after seven minutes at the Bridge. Frank Lampard fizzed a shot over the bar after 17 minutes. Back came Everton, Jo found Tim Cahill in the box and, after a neat piece of control, the Aussie spun and forced Cech into a smart save. A disappointing result for the Blues ended with Didier Drogba clipping the top of the bar in injury time.
