QPR briefly set pulses racing when Rowan Vine’s effort deflected off Christophe Berra before striking the crossbar, but McCarthy’s men held on to confirm their promotion to the Premier League.
Preston 6 – Cardiff 0 (Championship, April 18, 2009) Neil Mellor opened the scoring in the 17th minute and the former Liverpool striker added a second in the 41st minute with a low shot from distance. Cardiff missed a penalty on the stroke of halftime when Ross McCormack’s effort was saved by Andy Lonergan. And the Bluebirds’ misery was complete when Preston struck again after the break through Jon Parkin, an own-goal from Mark Kennedy and further goals from substitute Chris Brown and Lee Williamson.
Leeds 3 – Tranmere 1 (League One, April 18, 2009) Top scorer Jermaine Beckford fired Leeds in front on the quarter hour mark and Neil Kilkenny added a second on 26 minutes only for Sam Sodje’s terrible headed own goal a minute later to drag Tranmere back into the game. Luciano Becchio put the game beyond Rovers with a third on 56 minutes.
