Everton produce a stirring second-half comeback to thwart Manchester United; Sunderland win the derby for first time since 2000; Fabulous Tigers chew up the Baggies

Everton 1 – Manchester United 1 (Premier League, October 25, 2008) (Longer highlights here, MOTD highlights here.) After dominating the early exchanges, United took the lead just after the twenty minute mark when Darren Fletcher was played in by Giggs and finished well with his left foot. Minutes later Howard saved well from a Ronaldo shot. (First half highlights here.) Everton came out battling in the second half and got their reward just after the hour when Marouane Fellaini rose highest to a Phil Neville cross. Almost immediately Everton could have taken the lead when Yakubu pounced on Ferdinand’s weak back pass but his effort was pushed on to the post by Van der Sar. Wayne Rooney picked up a yellow card for a foul on Arteta and responded by kissing the United badge on his shirt. (Second half highlights here.)

Sunderland 2 – Newcastle 1 (Premier League, October 25, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Djibril Cisse gave Sunderland the lead in the Tyne-Wear derby when he finished at the back post from a mis-hit shot from Malbranque. Ten minutes later Shola Ameobi equalised for his second goal in consecutive games. With just over ten minutes remaining Keiran Richardson sent the Stadium of Light into delirium with a free-kick that gave Shay Given no chance.

West Brom 0 – Hull 3 (Premier League, October 25, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) The Baggies should have been ahead after eight minutes, Myhill saved Valero’s shot only for Jonas Olsson to head the rebound off the underside of the bar. After the break Hull made the hosts pay, Kamil Zayatte wrapped his foot around his marker to volley Marney’s corner past Carson. Soon it was two, Marlon King crossed from the left and Geovanni ran in to stoop home. Marlon King wrapped up the points with a composed finish after a route-one punt down the field. (Second half highlights here.)

Blackburn 1 – Middlesbrough 1 (Premier League, October 25, 2008) Both sides hit the woodwork early doors, Jeremy Aliadiere crashed a volley against the crossbar from four yards out, while Roque Santa Cruz was unlucky to see his shot strike the inside of the post to stay out. Middlesbrough then suffered from a dire call at Blackburn as the linesman wrongly ruled out Tuncay’s brilliantly executed bicycle-kick for offside. Fifteen minutes from time Afonso Alves scored the opener, out-pacing Ooijer and hammering a shot to fire past Robinson. But Benni McCarthy rose in the third minute of injury-time to head home the equaliser for Rovers. (Both goals can be seen here.)

Leeds 3 – Walsall 0 (League One, October 25, 2008) Leeds broke the deadlock in the 46th minute when Walsall failed to clear Delph’s corner and Becchio forced the ball over the line. Delph doubled the advantage in the 65th minute when Andy Robinson rolled a free-kick to him 25 yards out and his left-foot drive rocketed into the top-left corner. And Delph fired in his second and Leeds’ third after 87 minutes from 25 yards.
