Chelsea’s kids lose out in a thriller to Southampton; Everton win a thrilling Merseyside derby in the reserves league

Chelsea 3 – Southampton 4 (U18s friendly, October 13, 2008) Oscar Gobern scored after 20 minutes with a spectacular 20-yard volley, but Chelsea soon drew level through Jacopo Sala. The Saints pulled ahead for the second time when Tony Garrod scored, Tom Dunford opened up a 3-1 lead and the game was as good as over when Garyn Preen tucked in a fourth. The Blues rallied late on, Frank Nouble curled in a beauty, and Josh McEachran got a third, but the Saints held on for the win.

Liverpool 2 – Everton 3 (Barclays FA Premier Reserve League, October 15, 2008) After a low key first half (highlights here), the game exploded to life in the second half as Liverpool went into a two-goal lead. Jordy Brouwer opened the scoring 10 minutes, before Gerardo Bruna added a fine second 11 minutes later when he curled in a superb free-kick from the left, in off the post. James Vaughan headed Everton back into the game from Akpan’s cross. Then Lee Molyneux’s stunning free-kick levelled the scores on 69 minute, with Vaughan stealing the headlines nine minutes from time when he beat Bouzanis to an Anichebe through ball and lofted the ball into the empty net to mark a terrific turnaround. (Second half highlights here.)
