Chelsea taken apart at Old Trafford; Spurs sit two points off the bottom after a late defeat at Wigan

Manchester United 3 – Chelsea 0 (Premier League, January 10, 2008) Park Ji-Sung had an early chance which John Terry snuffed out at Old Trafford. In a frantic ending to the first half, Cristiano Ronaldo had a header chalked off from a corner, only for Ryan Giggs (who had a brilliant first half) to deliver a second dead-ball that Berbatov flicked onto the back post for Nemanja Vidic to power home. (First half highlights here.) Just after the hour mark United pulled further ahead, Ronaldo freed Evra down the left, the full-back was given time and space to deliver his cross and Wayne Rooney planted the ball home at the back post. Ronaldo came close to scoring but his shot went narrowly wide. Chelsea never looked capable of getting back in the game, and four minutes from time United rubbed their noses in it when Dimitar Berbatov scored from Ronaldo’s free-kick.

Wigan 1 – Tottenham 0 (Premier League, January 10, 2008) Jamie O’Hara steered a shot narrowly wide of Kirkland’s post in the early exchanges at the JJB Stadium. (First half highlights here.) The second half was a dire affair, but just as it looked like the game would end in stalemate Ryan Taylor swung in a corner that Maynor Figueroa thumped home a header to earn the three points for Steve Bruce. (Second half highlights here.)

Leeds 0 – Carlisle 2 (League One, January 10, 2008) Danny Graham fired Carlisle in front after 26 minutes before Michael Bridges came back to haunt his old club with the second ten minutes later.
