El Salvador and Canada make winning starts in Gold Cup

Costa Rica 1 – El Salvador 2 (Gold Cup, July 3, 2009) Osael Romero opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a superb solo finish after Williams Reyes had headed on a long ball. Costa Rica pulled level in the 63rd minute with a close range strike from Warren Granados before Romero grabbed the winner five minutes from the end with a side foot finish after poor defending from the Costa Ricans.

Canada 1 – Jamaica 0 (Gold Cup, July 3, 2009) Canada’s Ali Gerba struck the winner in the 75th minute when Mike Klukowski looped a cross into the area from the left wing and Gerba’s first-time volley flew past Jamaica keeper Donovan Ricketts.

Real Salt Lake 1 – San Jose Earthquakes 1 (MLS, July 3, 2009) A tidy run into the box combined with a neat finish saw the Quakes’s Arturo Alvarez score his fifth goal of the season in the 63rd minute. The hosts then had Fabian Espindola sent off in the 77th minute for kicking out at San Jose’s Brandon McDonald. But down to 10-men RSL found an equaliser as a late mix-up in the visitors backline saw Chris Leitch knock the ball past his own keeper.

Racing Club 2 – Newells Old Boys 1 (Clausura, July 3, 2009) Alexis Machuca’s second minute opener for the Old Boys was cancelled out by Matias Martinez in the first half while Adrian Lucero’s early second half strike gave Racing the win.

Portuguesa 1 – Parana 0 (Campeonato Brasileiro B, July 3, 2009) Gabriel’s 87th minute header settled the match.

ABC 1 – Ipatinga 1 (Campeonato Brasileiro B, July 3, 2009) Allesandro Lopez’s near-post flick header put Ipatinga ahead after 13 minutes. Ivan levelled for the hosts with a diving header just after the half hour mark.
