Barcelona 3 – Espanyol 2 (Agg. 3-2) (Copa del Rey, January 29, 2009) Bojan Krkic did the early damage for Barca, slotting in the first after 35 minutes and, after being released by a beautiful through-ball by Xavi at the start of the second period, Bojan struck again. The match looked all but over when Gerald Pique headed in the third, but Espanyol rallied to set up a nevous ending. Coro’s shot took a wicked deflection before Jose Callejon scored the goal of the night with a brilliant strike from 30-yards out. But Barca held on to progress to the semis.
Palmeiras 5 – Real Potosi 1 (Copa Libertadores, January 29, 2009) Keirrison, likely to be the next young Brazilian striker to make an impact on the world stage, claimed a hat-trick, as the Bolivian minnows were swept aside.
Sporting Cristal 2 – Estudiantes 1 (Copa Libertadores, January 29, 2009) Enzo Perez put the visitors ahead from a narrow angle after his shot found a gap between Manuel Heredia and the post after 28 minutes. Cristal equalised in the 40th minute when Roberto Palacios’ header somehow looped over Estudiantes goalkeeper Mariano Andujar and Hector Hurtado slotted home the winner nine minutes after halftime.
Anzoategui 2 – Deportivo Cuenca 0 (Copa Libertadores, January 29, 2009) Espindola’s top-poke gave the hosts the early advantage before Gonzalez’s shot on the angle sealed the win.
