Smalling nods in winner
It’s fair to say that England’s 1-0 international friendly win over Portugal on Thursday night was not a classic.
In Roy Hodgson’s final warm-up game England fans learnt that the exciting trio of Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney do not work particularly well together.
Portugal defender Bruno Alves was sent off in the first half for a dangerous high challenge on Harry Kane’s head but England failed to really take advantage of the extra man.
Manchester United centre half Chris Smalling popped up with a late winner, glancing in Raheem Sterling’s lovely cross from the flank.
England’s EURO 2016 hopes
This summer marks 50 years since England last won a major tournament and it looks like the half-century wait will likely continue in France at EURO 2016.
Roy Hodgson’s men crashed out of the World Cup without a win in 2014 but the new structure of the EUROs means three teams go through from most groups.
It would be highly embarrassing if England can’t make it out of a group containing Wales, Russia and Slovakia.
Their next game is against Russia in Marseille, having won all three of their warm up games by a one goal margin. Watch the highlights of last night’s game below.
