Ajax lose more ground in their title challenge

Marco van Basten’s team rallied in the second half, Miralem Sulejmani pulled a goal back in the 70th minute and two minutes later Luis Suarez levelled from the spot after Siem de Jong took a tumble in the box.

Vitesse 1 – Heerenveen 0 (Eredivisie, February 3, 2009) Vitesse broke Heerenveen hearts late on, Nick Hofs curling a sublime winner over Vandenbussche in the 84th minute.


Sivasspor 1* – Galatasaray 1 (Agg. 2-2) (Pens. 3-1) (Turkish Cup, February 3, 2009) Galatasaray took an early lead through Arda Turan but Yanick Kamanan equalised on the half hour mark with a super strike into the top corner. The match moved into extra time, and in the 118th minute Sivasspor had Mehmet Yildiz sent off. Sivasspor won the shoot-out to progress to the semi-finals.


Deportivo Cuenca 3 – Anzoategui 0 (Agg. 3-2) (Copa Libertadores, February 3, 2009) Rodrigo Teixeira put Cuenca ahead on 27 minutes and added another in the 68th. The third and crucial goal came from Ismael Villalba with 15 minnutes remaining, while Anzoategui also had Cuevas and Lobo sent off in a disappointing night.
