Aalborg surprise United with a plucky draw; Arsenal’s troubles continue at Porto

Manchester United 2 – Aalborg 2 (Champions League, December 10, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) After Cristiano Ronaldo had been presented with the Ballon D’or by Bobby Charlton and Denis Law, it took United just three minutes to go ahead, Carlos Tevez finishing from a Giggs through ball. Just after the half-hour Michael Jakobsen equalised with a faint touch from a Due free-kick. And the Danes then stunned Old Trafford by taking the lead, Anders Due was gifted the freedom of the left hand side, his cross picked out Jeppe Curth who sent a header into the opposite corner. (First half highlights here.) United equalised in the 52nd minute as Anderson threaded a beautiful ball through to Wayne Rooney who scored with a low shot that went through the keepers’ legs. Aalborg held on for the creditable draw that qualified them for the UEFA Cup.

Porto 2 – Arsenal 0 (Champions League, December 10, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Porto took the lead over Arsenal on the stroke of halftime, a corner came in from the right and Bruno Alves rose in the box and headed unchallenged past Almunia. (First half highlights here.) Arsenal fell further behind after the break as Fernando released Lisandro Lopez down the right, and the forward fired off a rocket that flew into the top corner.

Celtic 2 – Villarreal 0 (Champions League, December 10, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Some dodgy keeping by Villareal’s Viera let in Shaun Maloney who headed home to put Celtic one-up. A minute into first-half injury time Celtic moved further ahead, Aiden McGeady ran goalwards unopposed from the halfway line and drilled the ball left-footed into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Real Madrid 3 – Zenit St. Petersburg 0 (Champions League, December 10, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) The Juande Ramos era at Real Madrid got off to a promising start as Raul scrambled home midway through the first half as Zenit keeper Malafeev had a bit of a ‘mare. Early in the second half Real doubled their lead with a sublime solo goal from Arjen Robben who raced through and expertly chipped over the keeper. And Robben was instrumental in the third, slipping in Raul who brilliantly scooped the ball over the keeper.

Lyon 2 – Bayern Munich 3 (Champions League, December 10, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Miroslav Klose fired Bayern ahead just after the ten minute mark at Lyon. Franck Ribery added the second on his home soil and Bayern went into the break three-up when Miroslav Klose bagged his second of the half. After the break a determined Sidney Govou started and finished a move to give Lyon some hope, and the crowd truly began to believe in the comeback when Karim Benzema struck in a second.

Dynamo Kiev 1 – Fenerbahce 0 (Champions League, December 10, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Roman Eremenko took full advantage of an opening early on to put Kiev in front against Fenerbahce.

Juventus 0 – BATE 0 (Champions League, December 10, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Sebastian Giovinco skied a second half penalty in a poor night for Juve, who held onto top spot.

Steaua Bucharest 0 – Fiorentina 1 (Champions League, December 10, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Fiorentina secured passage to the UEFA Cup thanks to Alberto Gilardino’s second half header.

Chelsea reserves 4 – MLS XI 0 (Friendly, December 10, 2008) The MLS select squad were easily beate by a strong Chelsea reserve side, Morten Nielsen gave the Blues the lead before Scott Sinclair romped home with a hat-trick.

Thailand 3 – Malaysia 0 (East Asian Championship, December 10, 2008) Peter Reid’s reign over Thailand continued to go from strength to strength, Suksomkit gave the Thais a halftime lead and Dangda scored a second half brace.
