A miserable point against Pompey keeps Newcastle in the bottom three; Guimaraes keeper Nilson drops a clanger

Newcastle 0 – Portsmouth 0 (Premier League, April 27, 2009) In the must win game for Newcastle against Pompey, the Magpies suffered a frustrating opening 45 (highlights here) as the hosts created several half chances, Martins missing a sitter, without really testing David James.

Birmingham 1 – Preston 2 (Championship, April 25, 2009) Paul McKenna and Ross Wallace struck brilliant goals for Preston North End as they defeated Birmingham City, who had taken the lead through Keith Fahey. Lee Bowyer, Lee Williamson and Wallace all saw red in a thrilling encounter as the Blues now await a nervous final day at Reading in their bid for automatic promotion from the Championship.

Bristol City 1 – Sheffield Wednesday 1 (Championship, April 25, 2009) Lee Johnson had given the hosts a first half lead before Darren Potter rescued a share of the spoils to keep Wednesday in the top half of the table.

Coventry 2 – Watford 3 (Championship, April 25, 2009) The Hornets slipped two goals behind at the Ricoh Arena but second half goals from Tommy Smith, Gregor Rasiak and Tamas Priskin won the game and ensure Watford’s survival.

Darlington 1 – Brentford 3 (League Two, April 25, 2009) Alan Bennett then put the visitors in front in the 35th minute and Billy Clarke headed home two minutes before the break to double the advantage. Clarke then scored in the 54th minute to seal promotion for Andy Scott’s side, although the Quakers got a consolation through Pawel Abbot on 59 minutes.

Leixoes 2 – Vitoria Guimaraes 2 (Superliga, April 27, 2009) The mid-table clash between Leixoes and Guimaraes opened with the visitors taking a 13th minute lead thanks to a Nuno Assis penalty. Guimaraes keeper Nilson then commited a horrendous error to hand Leixoes an equaliser, the number one tried to play around with the ball in his area and so bad was his control that Braga managed to slide in the leveller. Braga doubled his tally with a fine strike from outside the box in the 43rd minute. Marquinhos equalised for Vitoria just after the hour mark, mopping up after the keeper flapped at a free-kick.

Ancona 1 – Cittadella 2 (Serie B, April 27, 2009) Cittadella striker Riccardo Meggiorini took just three minutes to bag his 15th goal of the season before former Empoli defender Richard Vanigli equalised two minutes later for the home side. After 14 minutes Federico Gerardi reconfirmed the visitors lead, an advantage they held until the final whistle.

Parma 0 – Salernitana 0 (Serie B, April 27, 2009)  Parma failed in their bid to keep on the trail of leaders Bari after being held to a goalless draw with relegation-threatened Salernitana.
