It’s the battle to avoid relegation in the Nations League League B Group 1 encounter between the Republic of Ireland and Armenia as the two sides sit third and fourth, respectively, ahead of the final game of this campaign’s Nations League.
Despite Ireland sitting just one point ahead of Armenia, there is a great contrast between the tallies of both sides so far. Quite incredibly, Armenia have still managed to rack up three points from their five games in the Nations League despite letting in a stunning 14 goals in just 450 minutes of action. This has come in the form of demolitions from Ukraine both home and away, as their 3-0 win in Kyiv back in June was met with a 5-0 thrashing on Armenia’s home patch last weekend.
They have also lost 4-1 to Scotland at home and 2-0 back in Glasgow, with Armenia’s only win actually coming against Ireland. Eduard Spertsyan scored the game’s only goal that day as he managed to steal all three points for Armenia on matchday one. They have, however, been battered in every game since.
As for Ireland, they were beaten from behind by rivals Scotland on Saturday, as John Egan’s first half goal was wiped out with two second-half efforts from the home side. Now, it is impossible - and has been for some time - for both Ireland and Armenia to earn promotion into League A. This is simply a battle to see who finishes last and consequently gets relegated into League C, although a draw would be good enough for Ireland to remain in League B with their one-point advantage.
Armenia will be hopeful in getting the job done, however, after beating Ireland last time out.
