St Johnstone vs Rangers betting tips: Scottish Premiership preview, predictions and odds

Alfredo Morelos

St Johnstone have won just one of their last 13 meetings with Rangers but that was a dramatic penalty shootout win at Ibrox en route to winning the Scottish Cup last season. The Gers are unbeaten in 14 trips to McDiarmid Park.

Rangers to win and both teams to score NO is 10/11.

Rangers to win and over 2.5 goals is 21/20.

Alfredo Morelos has scored seven goals in 12 appearances against St Johnstone. He is 3/1 to break the deadlock and 5/6 to add to his tally.

Match preview

After yet more dropped points on Sunday, can Rangers put pressure on league-leaders Celtic?

At the weekend, the Gers were seemingly cruising to a home victory over Motherwell when Alfredo Morelos and Fashion Sakala both struck within 60 seconds of each-other.

Morelos then had two goals flagged offside in the second half and this would prove costly with the Well fighting back and snatching a 2-2 draw.

That means Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men have won just three of eight Premiership games in 2022, despite winning nine on the bounce before this.

In Europe, the Light Blues enjoyed a famous 6-4 aggregate victory over Borussia Dortmund, featuring a 4-2 victory at Westfalenstadion.

They'll now play Crvena zvezda, or Red Star Belgrade if you prefer, for a place in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.

But, on the domestic front, with Celtic also drawing on Sunday, the Gers remain three points behind their bitter rivals.

St Johnstone meanwhile are simply fighting for their lives in Scotland's top-flight.

Despite taking an early lead through Callum Hendry on Saturday, the Saints ended up being beaten 3-1 by relegation rivals Ross County in Dingwall.

This was a massive blow for Callum Davidson's men who'd taken nine points from their previous five games, beating Livingston and Hearts.

However, St Johnstone remain in the relegation play-off spot, two points clear of Dundee but a huge seven adrift the Staggies and safety.

Will a season that began by drawing with Galatasaray in İstanbul end in relegation?

Here, Rangers, despite recent slip-ups, should be far too strong at McDiarmid Park.

St Johnstone team news

Callum Davidson is currently without numerous key players, namely Zander Clark, Shaun Rooney, Craig Bryson, David Wotherspoon, Cammy MacPherson and Chris Kane due to injury.

Nadir Çiftçi and Michael O'Halloran were the only real attacking options on the bench at the weekend so either one could come into the XI.

Although, Callum Hendry and to a lesser extent Glenn Middleton are likely to keep their places in attack.

Rangers team news

Giovanni van Bronckhorst too is very short of defensive options.

On Sunday, midfielder John Lundstram started at centre-back next to Connor Goldson, largely due to Filip Helander's injury.

However, surely one of Mateusz Żukowski, Borna Barišić, James Sands or Leon Balogun, who were all on the bench against Motherwell, would be a better option.

In midfield, Aaron Ramsey has played just 94 minutes since arriving on loan from Juventus with his only start coming against Annan.

Thus, the midfield could remain the same with weekend goal scorers Alfredo Morelos and Fashion Sakala leading the attack.
