Senegal vs Egypt betting tips: African World Cup play-off second leg preview, predictions and odds

Sadio Mane will be hoping his Senegal side will outlast Mo Salah's Egypt

First leg score: Egypt 1-0 Senegal

Senegal had won three consecutive meetings with Egypt, prior to the first leg.

Both teams to score NO is 2/5.

Both teams to score NO and under 2.5 goals is 8/15.

Senegal to win and both teams to score NO is 6/4.

Match preview

There was never likely to be too much to separate these two African giants but, after the first leg, it's Egypt who boast a slender advantage.

Just four minutes into the first leg, the huge Cairo International Stadium erupted as the Pharaohs took the lead.

Amr El Solia's ball forward picked out Mohamed Salah and his shot hit the crossbar but rebounded into his own net off the unfortunate Saliou Ciss.

Just before half time, Sadio Mané had Senegal's first opportunity, dancing through the defence before firing miles over the crossbar.

From a second half corner, Mané went close again with a header before, from the second phase, Famara Diédhiou could only find the side-netting.

Senegal continued to push for an equaliser, Ismaïla Sarr was denied by Mohamed El Shenawy, but Egypt held on for a 1-0 victory.

Will they now make that advantage count in Dakar?

These two met just last month in the Africa Cup of Nations Final with Senegal prevailing via a penalty shootout after a goalless draw.

That was the first time les Lions de la Téranga had been crowned African champions, having fallen in the finals of 2002 and 2019.

Now, Aliou Cissé's side need a big turnaround if they're to make it to back-to-back World Cups and a third overall.

Egypt meanwhile have now appeared in ten AFCON Finals, lifting the trophy a record seven-times, most recently in 2010.

Despite this, before 2018, their only two World Cup appearance had come in Italy, in 1934 and 1990, before ending their 28-year exile in the last cycle.

Manager Carlos Queiroz has been at the last three World Cups, once with Portugal and twice in charge of Iran, and doesn't want that streak to end.

Can Egypt cling onto their first leg lead or will Senegal turn it around at Diamniadio Olympic Stadium and be celebrating at their expense once again?

Senegal team news

Senegal's XI is pretty much the one that featured at AFCON in January/February and, having won that tournament, why not?

Famara Diédhiou continues to get the nod up front, flanked by talisman Sadio Mané and Ismaïla Sarr who's now fully-fit.

Cheikhou Kouyaté, Nampalys Mendy and Idrissa Gana Gueye remains the rather functional midfield trio.

Although the longer Senegal are behind in this tie, one will have to be sacrificed for a more attacking option, such as Keita Baldé Diao or Boulaye Dia.

Goalkeeper Édouard Mendy and centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly will keep their places, but Abdou Diallo is a doubt after going off in Cairo.

Pape Abou Cissé will come in; it's vitally important Senegal keep a clean sheet here with the away goals rule in operation.

Egypt team news

Mohamed Salah is the star attraction of the semi-finals

Everything about this Egypt squad revolves around Mohamed Salah with the Liverpool superstar provoking the own goal on Friday.

If he can add to his 47 international goals in Dakar, that could be enough to take his side through given that Senegal would then need at least three.

Trézéguet, who recently joined İstanbul Başakşehir, and Galatasaray's Mostafa Mohamed will complete the forward line, but they're very much the support cast.

Centre-back Mohamed Abdelmonem went off just 39 minutes into the first leg so Yasser Ibrahim is likely to come in.

Mohamed El Shenawy, who's fit again, will keep his place in goal, chosen over surprise AFCON hero Mohamed Abou Gabal.
