Portsmouth will qualify for the League One play-offs if they beat Accrington Stanley on Saturday, but that won’t be an easy task.

Accrington Stanley have are unbeaten in their last four heading into Saturday’s match. Despite being 13th, Stanley could, mathematically, end up finishing one place behind Portsmouth, who are currently 6th. Stanley don’t have much riding on their final match of the season, but they will be hoping for a top-half finish.

Curiously, these two sides met last week in the reverse fixture, which ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw at the Crown Ground. A repeat result is unlikely to be good enough for Portsmouth to qualify for the play-offs, with Charlton and Oxford creeping up their tails.

Portsmouth vs Accrington Stanley: Match preview

Play-off hopefuls Portsmouth welcome Accrington Stanley to Fratton Park on Saturday on the final day of the League One season.

Portsmouth kept their play-off hopes in their own hands with a crucial 3-1 win at Wimbledon last weekend. Pompey went behind early on but were immediately back on level terms following Ronan Curtis’s quick equaliser. The visitors then took the lead thanks to two goals from Lee Brown in first-half stoppage time.

Danny Cowley’s side are now unbeaten in their last three matches. Portsmouth are on 72 points and currently occupy the 6th and final play-off spot, but they have two teams – Oxford United and Charlton Athletic – hot on their heels, each one point behind.

Portsmouth will qualify for the play-offs if they beat Accrington. They could also qualify with a draw (or even a defeat), so long as they better both of Oxford and Charlton’s results, which are against Burton and Hull respectively. Pompey will miss out on the chance for promotion if either one of Oxford or Charlton better their result.

Portsmouth have an average at best record at home this season. Pompey’s 32 points from 22 matches at Fratton Park ranks 13th in the league. In fact, they have picked up eight more points away from home in the campaign.

To be fair, Portsmouth have won three of their last four at home including their most recent home match, which ended in a 1-0 win over Bristol Rovers in April.

Accrington Stanley were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Charlton Athletic last weekend. Joe Pritchard gave John Coleman’s side the lead before Charlton equalised. Accrington are unbeaten in their last four matches, the last three of which have all ended in draws.

Last weekend’s draw leaves Accrington 13th in the table on 64 points. Level on points with Doncaster and Gillingham, and one behind MK Dons.

Accrington’s away record ranks 17th, with seven wins and six draws from their 22 matches away from home. Only Swindon have conceded more goals away from home than Accrington (42). Stanley have only won one of their last nine away games.

These two sides met as recently as last week Tuesday with the match finishing in an epic 3-3 draw. Goals from Colby Bishop and Cameron Burgess had Accrington 2-0 up at the break. Early second-half goals from John Marquis and Ryan Williams put Portsmouth back on level terms. Marquis then scored what seemed to be a certain winner in the 91st minute but the action wasn’t over yet. Marquis was then involved in the other end, scoring a 95th-minute own goal to tie the game.

Late goals seem to be a theme in Accrington’s recent matches, with eight goals being scored after the 80th minute in their last five matches.

Portsmouth have failed to win any of their previous four matches against Stanley, with three of those games ending in draws.

Portsmouth team news vs Accrington Stanley

Jack Whatmough is available after serving a four-match suspension. Whatmough will be competing with Paul Downing for a start at centre-back.

Jordy Hiwula is fit for Pompey, having missed the last 10 matches with an ankle injury. John Marquis is still set to lead Portsmouth’s attack but Hiwula could be an important option off the bench.
