West Ham vs Southampton: Premier League preview

Southampton travel to the capital to take on West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday in a relegation six-pointer.

Southampton begin the weekend inside the relegation zone. However, a win on Saturday would see them move out of the bottom three and above West Ham.

Prior to the international break, Southampton progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over League One side Wigan Athletic. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares netted for the Saints.

Southampton lost their last Premier League match 3-0 away at Newcastle.

Crowd trouble at the London Stadium

West Ham’s last home fixture was marred by crowd trouble. Home supporters fought in the stands with the traveling Burnley fans.

Things weren’t any better on the pitch for the Hammers, who suffered a 3-0 home defeat.

The loss ended a five-match unbeaten run at home for David Moyes’ side, who begin the weekend one place and two points above the drop-zone.

Southampton were the winners in a thrilling contest in August’s reverse fixture. West Ham twice came form behind to level the scores before Charlie Austin netted a stoppage-time penalty. Manolo Gabbiadini, Dusan Tadic and Javier Hernandez (2) were the other goal scorers at St Mary’s.

Manuel Lanzini picked up a knock on international duty with Argentina but is expected to recover in time for Saturday.

Pedro Obiang and Sam Byram remain out with long-term injuries.

Southampton team news vs West Ham

Steven Davis, who has been sidelined with a hamstring strain since February, was forced to withdraw from the Northern Ireland camp.

Ryan Bertrand was another international casualty, withdrawing from the Three Lions squad as a precautionary measure. The full-back is expected to be fine for Saturday.

Charlie Austin is closing in on a return but it would be a big surprise were he to start at West Ham after a long injury lay-off.
