Will this be the start of a memorable, or perhaps even historic, FA Cup run for West Ham United?

In their history, the Hammers have won this trophy three times, doing so in 1964, 1975 and 1980.

Their last final appearance was 16 years ago, the thrilling 3-3 draw with Liverpool which resulted in the Reds winning on penalties.

So, can this generation of West Ham squad end the club’s 42-year wait for a trophy?

Well, they look well-placed to compete for major honours.

Last Saturday evening, the Irons raced into a 3-0 half time lead at Crystal Palace.

Michail Antonio opened the scoring before Manuel Lanzini scored a stunner followed by a spot-kick not long after.

Palace got it back to 3-2 in the second half before almost equalising, but West Ham, just about, left Selhurst Park with all the points.

This means they’ve enjoyed back-to-back league wins for the first time since early-November, demolishing Watford 4-1 on to end 2021.

David Moyes’ men are currently fifth in the Premier League, above Spurs and Manchester United, and not many would’ve predicted that.

The Hammers are still interested in three competitions this season, having topped their UEFA Europa League group.

This has seen them go straight through to the round of 16 and they’ll next be in European action on 10 March.

So, there are two opportunities for West Ham to enjoy a memorable adventure in a cup competition.

Will West Ham reach the FA Cup fourth round with a win here?

Will Leeds win in London?

Leeds United meantime, somewhat surprisingly, have only won the competition once, lifting the cup in 1972.

They also reached the finals of 1965, 1970 and 1973 during the club’s glory years.

These days, the Whites are in the midst of a Premier League relegation battle, but did enjoy a crucial victory in that regard a week ago.

Last Sunday, goals from Jack Harrison, Stuart Dallas and Dan James secured a massive 3-1 victory over Burnley at Elland Road.

That was just Leeds’ fourth victory of the season but it keeps them in 16th, eight points above Burnley who occupy the third relegation place.

Obviously, staying in the top-flight is their priority this season and, since Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival in West Yorkshire, their cup record is very poor.

Under the Argentinian, Leeds have won just four of 11 cup ties, including shootout wins, crashing out to fourth-tier Crawley at this stage a year ago.

Also, the visitors have won just two of their last 33 matches played in London, so are hoping for a more memorable trip to the capital this time.

Will Leeds win at the London Stadium?

David Moyes has limited options in certain areas and, given that they have a free week before and after this tie, is likely to name a strong side.

Although, there will be a change in goal with Łukasz Fabiański rested and Alphonse Areola deputising.

The French World Cup winner has made eight appearances for the Hammers, five in the Europa League and three in the Carabao Cup.

At the back, they’re very light with Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell all out with injuries of varying lengths.

So, with no other options, Craig Dawson and Issa Diop will start in the middle.

Either side, Arthur Masuaku and Ryan Fredericks could come in, the latter for just his sixth appearances of the season.

Ben Johnson and Vladimír Coufal would therefore rested.

In midfield, the usual duo is of course Tomáš Souček and Declan Rice.

But, Mark Noble could get a rare start these days, making his 540th appearance for the club, desperate to win a trophy in, what is, his final campaign.

Alongside could be Alex Král who’s struggled for minutes since joining from Spartak Moskva this summer.

Further forward, Manuel Lanzini could keep his place after his brace at Selhurst Park.

Saïd Benrahma could also start again with Nikola Vlašić and Andriy Yarmolenko coming in, the latter filling in up front.

This would see Pablo Fornals, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio left in reserve if needed.

LEEDS, ENGLAND – SEPTEMBER 25: Leeds player Kalvin Phillips in action during the Premier League match between Leeds United and West Ham United at Elland Road on September 25, 2021 in Leeds, England. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images)

Leeds United meanwhile have been down to the bare bones in recent weeks, due to a Covid-19 outbreak and an injury crisis.

So, Marcelo Bielsa has to choose between his first-choice players and teenagers, which is what this XI will be comprised of.

Illan Meslier has started all 22 games this season, including all three League Cup ties, and that isn’t likely to change here.

At the back, they’re without club captain Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk and teenager Charlie Cresswell.

So, unless 18 year olds Kris Moore or Leo Fuhr Hjelde are handed their debuts, it’ll be Diego Llorente and Robin Koch at centre-back again.

In midfield, their most important cog, Kalvin Phillips, will be out until March and his absence is a key reason behind their lack of points.

Without him, Adam Forshaw operates as the distributing number six.

Alongside, Mateusz Klich could be given a rest with teenager Lewis Bate coming in alongside Stuart Dallas.

Out-wide, star players Raphinha and Jack Harrison could be rested, so Dan James and highly rated 20 year old Crysencio Summerville would com in.

In attack, Joe Gelhardt started three Premier League games in November and December and could lead the line again.

This would see Tyler Roberts join another future star Sam Greenwood on the bench.

Patrick Bamford, who’s only played 22 minute since 17 September, scoring in this period, could be fit enough for a place on the bench.

Will this depleted Leeds side reach round four?
