With so many inexperienced and uncapped players in their squad, it’s hard to know just what to expect from this particular USA outfit, although this does feel like a new dawn for US soccer.

What is clear is that there’s loads of young talent in there from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. If they manage to click straight away, Wales could be in trouble.

Wales will be without head coach Ryan Giggs on the touchline. The former Manchester United winger was arrested “on suspicion of assault” last week. The Dragons’ focus will be on their upcoming Nations League games, so one or two first-choice players may have to settle for a spot on the bench.

Wales vs USA: Match preview

Wales host the United States in an international friendly at the Liberty Stadium on Thursday evening.

Head coach Ryan Giggs will not be with the Wales squad after being “arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend” last week, although Giggs did select the squad.

Wales have won three, drawn one and lost one of their five international matches in 2020. Their only defeat came in last month’s friendly at Wembley, where the Dragons lost 3-0.

Wales are unbeaten in the Nations League and are top of Group B4 on 10 points with two matches remaining. Jonathan Williams scored the only goal of the game in Wales’ last match away to Bulgaria.

Wales have only lost one of their last 11 international matches. They have also kept six clean sheets in their last seven.

Following Thursday’s friendly, Wales play their two final Nations League group games at home to Ireland and Finland.

Thursday’s game is the USA’s first since a 1-0 friendly win over Costa Rica in January. The US have won four of their last five matches, although Thursday’s squad will be totally different, so it’s difficult to read too much into their form. The USA have another friendly against Panama to come on the weekend.

Wales are currently ranked 20th in the World while the USA are ranked 22nd.

These two nations have only met once previously, in an international friendly in 2003. USA won the match 2-0, with Landon Donovan and former Leeds United winger Eddie Lewis scoring the goals.

Wales team news vs USA

Rob Page will lead the side from the touchline in the absence of head coach Ryan Giggs. Speaking on Monday, Page insisted that “Nothing changes, it’s Ryans team. It’s Ryan’s squad”.

Gareth Bale returns to the squad after missing out in the October internationals. Bale is the only player in the squad with more than 3 international goals to his name.

First-choice goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey is sidelined until the new year. Leicester’s Danny Ward is likely to keep goal for Wales.

Chris Gunter could move a step closer to reaching a century of international caps. The Charlton Athletic defender is on 97.

Kieffer Moore led Wales’ attack in last month’s friendly against England and could do so again on Thursday.

Lincoln City’s Brennan Johnson and Newport County’s Josh Sheehan are the two uncapped outfielders named in the squad.

Aaron Ramsey has withdrawn from the national team squad after picking up an injury with Juventus. Hal Robson-Kanu also misses out with an arm injury.

Swansea City defender Ben Cabango has also withdrawn from the squad after picking up a hamstring injury.

USA team news vs Wales

The United States have named an incredibly exciting squad, with young talent from clubs including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Leicester City, among others.

The footballing future looks bright for the USA. 14 of the 24 players called up are under the age of 21 – seven of whom are teenagers. In all, Gregg Berhalter has called up 10 uncapped players.

Emerging wunderkid Yunus Musah has received his first senior call-up. The 17-year-old, formerly of Arsenal’s academy, has impressed in midfield for Valencia this season and has previously represented England at youth level.

Bayern Munich’s Chris Richards, PSV’s Richard Ledezma, Borussia Dortmund’s Giovanni Reyna and Barcelona’s Sergino Dest are further young talents in the squad.

Man City goalkeeper Zack Steffen should start in goal.

At 33 years of age, Fulham’s Tim Ream is the most senior player in the side and also has the most caps (40) in the squad.

For the first time in ages, there is only one US-based player in the entire squad, midfielder Sebastian Lletget. Werder Bremen youngster Josh Sargent was named in the preliminary squad but not the final 24.
