Betting Prediction: Wales 0 – Switzerland 1

Wales and Switzerland come into the opening phase of group play with both sides needing to add goals to their dossier if they are to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stage of Euro 2020.

Neither side reliably found the back of the net in 2016, and they could potentially cancel each other out here in some measure.

Wales remain a stubborn side to negotiate, but Switzerland have deeper attacking quality and could do just enough to find a breakthrough before full-time.

Recommended Wales vs Switzerland betting tips

Correct Score: Switzerland 1-0

Switzerland have the edge in this one. Wales have scored just three goals in their last five matches, while Switzerland have won five in a row while smashing 16-goals in the game period, including putting seven past Liechtenstein. Wales are usually tough to negotiate, and the only time they have been handed big defeats was against joint-favorite pair France and Belgium. The Swiss could see this out by a close margin.

To Score First: Mario Gavranovic

Dinamo Zagreb center-forward Mario Gavranovic has been in good goal-scoring form of late for Switzerland, bagging 4-goals in his last 3-caps for the national team including a hat-trick against Liechtenstein. Assuming he features in the starting XI, he presents another difficult player to deal with in the box alongside Harris Seferovic and could open his Euro 2020 account on matchday one.

Wales vs Switzerland betting tips: Match preview

No one expects Wales to recreate their magical run to the semi-finals at Euro 2016, and having been placed in a group with dark horse Italy as well as Switzerland and Turkey, Rob Page’s outfit will have it all to do.

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey remain the headline names for a Wales squad that lacks star power but has been known to perform better than the sum of their parts this calendar year, beating both the Czech Republic and Mexico by a 1-0 scoreline.

Goals are expected to be a continued issue for the Dragons. With no recognised striker, Harry Wilson may be utilised through the centre-forward channel rather than his natural role as a winger or in the number-10 hole.

Page will have to be crafty during group play if Wales are to threaten, while keeping faith in their ability to keep within arms reach of their opponent if they are to hope 2016 can be repeated.

Switzerland must look to at least equal 2016 performance

Coming into their fifth appearance at the European Championship, Switzerland has left much to be desired across their history in the competition. Three appearances amounted to nothing more than token resistance in the group stage, while 2016 saw them reach the round of 16 but could hardly claim to be one of the more dangerous sides in group play.

This still remains a nation that has considerable talent under manager Vladimir Petkovic, with a squad that features a heavy Bundesliga influence in its ranks. Much like Wales, goals will be the question that needs answering with the Swiss managing just three goals in their four-match stint back in Euro 2016.

Signs of life have been on display in an attacking sense, however. Petkovic’s men have scored at least 3-goals in three of their last 5 matches during a 7-match undefeated run (6-1-0). They have managed to remain competitive against bigger opponents as well, keeping within a goal against Belgium (2-1 L), Spain (1-0 L), and Croatia (2-1 L), while drawing Germany on two occasions (3-3, 1-1) in the process.

Should Petkovic get it right with what is a solid squad, Switzerland should really be looking to start group play with three points against Wales.

Wales team news vs Switzerland

Wales caretaker boss Rob Page takes the Dragons to their second-ever European Championship appearance, but clarity on how he will approach group play is spotty.

Page has deployed with both a back three and a back four formation in their warm up fixtures, so at the very least, Wales will be able to count on a bit of tactical flexibility.

The only questions around the squad are regarding Aaron Ramsey and Ethan Ampadu.

Wales’ record without the Juventus midfielder has been strong, but his quality would be hard to omit from the XI while Ampadu – preferred as a midfielder for Wales – could very easily take a back seat. At the very least, Rob Page will have some options.

Switzerland team news vs Wales

Vladimir Petkovic leads a solid Switzerland squad to Euro 2020 that features good depth of quality.

It is likely that the Swiss will be deployed in a back three during group play, and the subsequent reliance on the wide areas from overlapping full-backs will make for an interesting talking point when it comes to team selection.

Steven Zuber and Ricardo Rodriguez will compete for the left-back role, while Dennis Zakaria, Djibril Sow, and Remo Freuler are all under consideration to partner captain Granit Xhaka in the heart of the midfield.
