Betting prediction: Villarreal 1-0 Arsenal

Villarreal has been superb in the Europa League this season, winning eleven of their twelve fixtures and drawing the remainder.

On top of that, The Yellow Submarine has not dropped a single point at Estadio de La Ceramica, and the tie presents a considerable challenge to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side that may still be without some key assets despite their return to fitness/availability.

This has a two-legged affair written all over it. Arsenal is too decent an outfit to be put to the sword after the first leg, especially with the second leg back in London.

Villarreal will absolutely fancy their chances on their home patch and could do just enough to take control of the tie even if temporarily.

Villarreal vs Arsenal: Recommended bets

Halftime/Full Time: Draw – Villarreal

This has all the makings of a tactical battle that will be incredibly hard to call. Villarreal’s form in the competition and fortress-like results at home is a huge ace in the hole for Unai Emery and his ability to take control of the tie after the first 90-minute exchange. But Mikel Arteta has a habit of tactically outclassing big/bigger managers since he took over at Arsenal, so it is hard to view this as a guarantee in any direction. Arsenal will surely want an away goal, or at the very least, to minimise damage before they return home, but Villarreal has bagged 18-goals in six home fixtures in the Europa League, so it is hard to suggest they would be blanked even by the defensively improved Gunners. A half-time stalemate and Villarreal just knicking the result could be a good bet given the odds (5/1).

To Score First: Gerard Moreno

With 10 goals in his last ten appearances in all competitions, which includes four strikes in three consecutive knockout stage outings in the Europa League, Spanish international striker Gerard Moreno is a considerable goal threat for Arsenal to contend with at this stage in the competition. His 6-goals overall in the competition have him sitting just one behind Borja Mayoral, Pizzi, and Yusuf Yacizi, all of whom sit on seven. Former Borussia Dortmund forward Paco Alcácer has the same strike total as Moreno, but the recent overall form in front of goal showed by the 29-year-old makes him a chief avenue for Unai Emery if Villarreal cracks the Arsenal backline on Thursday.

Villarreal vs Arsenal: Match preview

Everyone knew that there was always going to be this storyline to write about as both Villarreal and Arsenal kept charging forward in the Europa League knockout stages, and no one was left disappointed. After being sacked by the Gunners leadership and replaced by current boss Mikel Arteta, Emery returned to his native Spain and has gotten back to business. After reaching the fourth Europa League final of his career when he was with Arsenal, he also lost the first of his career when he was ousted 4-1 by rivals Chelsea in Baku. Now, with a chance to reach the final for the fifth time, Emery will undoubtedly feel as though he has much to prove to a club – and fanbase – that he feels jettisoned him too soon.

Villarreal and Nigerian international winger Samuel Chukwueze recently heaped praise on the Basque headmaster, labeling him as a manager who “has an amazing footballing brain.” The Umuahai-native, who arrived in Spain in 2017 where he then completed his youth education before breaking into the first team in 2018, has also credited Emery with helping him improve as a footballer overall.

“Before I saw football as entitlement just to play how I want, attack, dribble, to entertain the fans. Now I think I understand what it means to be tactically disciplined, knowing when to attack, when to defend. I think my overall understanding of the game has changed a huge amount. I enjoy playing under Unai Emery. He’s amazing and so tactical in everything he does. He can push you to the limit, but he’s a fantastic coach. He has an amazing football brain. He’s amazed me, how I’ve seen him change things from game to game.”

Though much of the talk around Villarreal will be about Emery’s tactical rigidity – and its effectiveness in the competition – as well as goalscorers Gerard Moreno and Paco Alcácer, Chukwueze could have a serious role to play against Arsenal. There is still a measure of uncertainty if Mikel Artera will thrust Kieran Tierney back into the matchday XI or if he calls upon either Granit Xhaka or Cédric Soares to deputise in his stead. No matter who is selected in the left-back role, the pace, technical qualities, and direct threat posed by Chukwueze could be a huge tactical card that Emery could turn over at the poker table to big results; if Chukwueze can perform. Though the Nigerian has been labeled inconsistent, the qualities he does bring to the table could be a huge headache for the Arsenal backline.

Returning trio provide a massive boon to Arsenal and Europa League chances

Arsenal supporters felt the combined sigh of relief and elation of possibility when boss Mikel Arteta gave Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, and Kieran Tierney a good chance at featuring in the first-leg semi-final against Villarreal on Thursday. The news came not a moment too soon after Arsenal limped into the dressing room after falling 1-0 to Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton over the weekend in what was a pretty poor display. The Gunners’ last win in all competitions came when they thrashed Slavia Prague 4-0 in the Czech capital two weeks ago, and much like their upcoming opposition, are not in decent domestic form at the minute.

A reinforced Arsenal team in Spain could be just the tonic for what is, beyond question, the most crucial period for the club this season. With European qualification through the Premier League all but out of the question for the North London outfit, the only campaign left for Arteta to undertake would be a continental one that ends in Gdansk. And at current, the Gunners are probably the odds-on favorite to win the competition other than Manchester United, who have a tricky tie of their own in Serie A outfit AS Roma. While there may be no additional incentive for Arteta when he faces off against Unai Emery, the reverse theory may necessarily not apply. As he continues to prove his tactical acumen against top managers in the Premier League, this is unquestionably Arteta’s biggest, and most important test.

It was nothing but disappointment for Arsenal last season when the Gunners crashed out of the same competition early at the hands of Olympiakos, a side they sent packing on their road to the semi-finals this season. On that front alone, Arteta has already made progress in a years time at the club, but winning his second major trophy in a short space of time, and Arsenal’s first piece of silverware since their Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in 1994, would go a very long way to show that he is in fact the right man to take the club forward on the pitch. Passage into next season’s Champions League would be a massive boost to club coffers as well as club attractability when they enter into another critical summer window.

Arsenal coming into proceedings with a fully-fit strike force allows Arteta multiple avenues to consider in how he hopes to hit Emery where it hurts, which will surely include the possibility of both Lacazette and Aubameyang making the matchday XI. It is undoubtedly as tricky a test as ever, but one that Arteta and Arsenal are capable of passing.

Villarreal team news vs Arsenal

Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery has a near-full strength squad to choose from when Villarreal welcomes Arsenal to Spain for their Europa League semi-final first-leg clash.

Vincente Iborra is the only absentee Emery must consider, but it is expected that El Submarino Amarillo will deploy in a 4-4-2 as has been customary

Arsenal team news vs Villarreal

Mikel Arteta may have fewer headaches than first thought as Arsenal look to make a run to another Europa League final. David Luiz is the only player guaranteed to be unavailable.

The Gunners boss eluded to all three of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, and Kieran Tierney could all be fit for Thursday but did not say if they would feature in the XI.
