Venezuela vs Uruguay: Match details

Match: Venezuela vs Uruguay

Competition: WC Qual, CONMEBOL

Date: June 8, 2021

Kick-off time: 11:30 pm, June 8, 2021 (UK time)

Stadium: Jose Antonio Anzoategui

Betting prediction: Venezuela 0-1 Uruguay

Uruguay have historically run the rule over Venezuela in their previous thirty-one encounters, with La Vinotinto managing just five wins against La Celeste in 56-years. Uruguay have hardly been consistent throughout their World Cup qualifying campaign however, but with Venezuela sitting just two points clear of the bottom of the table, Uruguay should be able to come away from Caracas with a necessary 3-points before they begin their Copa America campaign against Argentina.

Venezuela vs Uruguay: Recommended bets

Halftime/Full-Time Correct Score: Uruguay 1-0 Halftime/Uruguay 1-0 Full-Time

Uruguay have struggled of late when coming together at the national level, failing to score in their previous two qualifying fixtures against Paraguay and Brazil. With Edison Cavani not in the squad, the goals really do live and die at the feet of Luis Suarez, and if the Atletico Madrid forward is kept quiet, it may be tough to find a comfortable lead in Caracas.

To Score First: Luis Suarez

Who else, really? The mercurial forward has scored in each of the last three matches in which Uruguay has found the back of the net. Though they have been blanked in their last two outings, Suarez will more than likely find himself on the end of a handful of chances and given his superb international record, is certainly a strong candidate to open the scoring.

Venezuela vs Uruguay: Match preview

No Salomon Rondon for Venezuela means that manager Jose Peseiro will likely have to turn to MLS and Atlanta United sensation Josef Martinez to fill the goal-scoring void left in Rondon’s wake.

Rondon’s record for La Vinotinto has been vital across his entire international career, with 31-goals in 82-appearances for his country placing him comfortably clear of both Giancarlo Maldonado and Juan Arango at the top of the all-time Venezuelan goal chart.

Martinez has been one of the top forwards in MLS since his arrival in Atlanta back in 2017, smashing 79-goals in 91-appearances for The Five Stripes, but his prolific nature on American shores has hardly translated across the rest of his club career, or for the national team. There are not many that give Venezuela much of a chance to finish in the top four or five across CONMEBOL qualifying for the World Cup, and in a similar vein, any considerable success in Copa America would be unexpected. But if they do turn a head or two, Martinez will have to be chief to any shocks they intend to perpetrate.

Uruguay remain reliant on Suarez despite deep quality

The center-forward duopoly of Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani has been the stuff of iconic status for Uruguay over the years. A combined 114-goals (Suarez 63, Cavani 51) in 235-appearances for the world-class tandem produced one of the finest international strike partnerships of their generation.

But with Cavani still serving his two-match ban after his horror tackle against Brazil back in November, Suarez will have to shoulder nearly all the goal-scoring responsibilities for La Celeste in his absence. Suarez’s goal tally is nearly double that of all over Uruguayan players in the current squad, with key center-back pair Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin offering up the next-best goal threat for manager Oscar Tabarez, with eight goals a piece.

Issues in front of goal already reared its ugly head against Paraguay in a 0-0 draw at home in Montevideo. With Copa America just around the corner, recovering Cavani should prove vital. The hope will be that Suarez can be influential enough on his own in the meantime.

Venezuela team news vs Uruguay

Venezuelan manager Jose Peseiro will be without a handful of key players with a result against Uruguay vital for their chances of climbing up the table.

Salomon Rondon, Andres Ponce, Yangel Herrera, Yeferson Soteldo, Juan Pablo Anor, and Yordan Osorio all missing out on national team call-ups through injury.

Without Rondon available, Atlanta United’s Josef Martinez will have to pick up the goal-scoring slack of Venezuela hopes to crack a usually stubborn Uruguay defense.

Uruguay team news vs Venezuela

Oscar Tabarez will have a nearly fully fit squad to choose from as Uruguay looks to strengthen their position for the automatic qualifying places for World Cup 2022.

Giorgian De Arrascaeta and youngster Joaquin Piquerez are the only absentees Tabarez must contend with and despite their Copa America clash with Argentina around the corner, Uruguay should field their strongest possible XI.
