Competition: WC Qual, CONMEBOL

Date: November 17, 2020

Kick-off time: 11:00 pm, November 17, 2020 (UK time)

Betting prediction: Uruguay 0-1 Brazil

Brazil are the only South American side to have won 3 out of 3 World Cup qualifiers. With 15 matchdays still to be played, qualification is still some way away, but Brazil have certainly made an early statement.

Uruguay have made a fair start to their qualifying campaign, winning two and losing one of their three matches.

The absence of Luis Suarez – who is currently the leading goal scorer in CONMEBOL qualifying – will be a massive blow to Uruguay’s hopes.

Uruguay vs Brazil: Match preview

Brazil’s final match of 2020 sees them travel to Montevideo for their 2022 World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay.

Brazil have made a 100% start to their qualifying campaign. Last month they beat Bolivia 5-0 and Peru 4-2. Last week they secured a 1-0 home win over Venezuela. Bobby Firmino scored the only goal of the game.

Brazil have won nine consecutive matches away from home and are unbeaten on the road in their last 21 matches. Brazil’s last defeat away from home came in October 2015.

Uruguay suffered a surprise 4-2 defeat away to Ecuador last month but bounced back last week with a convincing 3-0 away win in Colombia. Edinson Cavani gave Uruguay an early lead. Luis Suarez doubled the lead from the penalty spot before Darwin Nunez sealed the win.

Uruguay have won their last four matches played on home soil. Their last defeat in Uruguay was against Brazil in 2017.

The two sides’ last meeting – an international friendly in Brazil in 2018 – ended 1-0 in Brazil’s favour, with Neymar scoring from the penalty spot.

Brazil and Uruguay have played each other 76 times previously. Brazil have won 38 of those matches, losing 21 and drawing 17. The two sides have a fairly even record in the early 20th century but Brazil are unbeaten against Uruguay in their last 10 meetings dating back to 2003.

Uruguay team news vs Brazil

Luis Suarez will miss out after testing positive for Covid-19, defender Matias Vina and backup goalkeeper Rodrigo Munoz also tested positive and have begun their quarantine period.

Benfica striker Darwin Nunez scored off the bench against Colombia and should replace Suarez in the starting eleven. Nunez is touted by many to be Uruguay’s next big star.

Agustin Oliveros is likely to replace Vina at left-back.

Gabriel Neves came on in second-half stoppage time against Colombia to win his maiden cap. Six of the 20 players in Uruguay’s squad are still uncapped, including 32-year-old Getafe defender Damian Suarez.

Sebastian Coates, Maxi Gomez and Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo have withdrawn from the side through injury, while Cristhian Stuani was only named in Uruguay’s preliminary squad.

Celtic’s Diego Laxalt was part of last month’s squad but has not received a call up this time around.

Brazil team news vs Uruguay

Neymar has failed to recover from a hamstring injury and has withdrawn from the squad.

Although Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton surprisingly started both of Brazil matches last month, Ederson returned to the starting eleven against Venezuela. Liverpool’s Alisson must be wondering what he needs to do to start for his country.

Against Venezuela, Brazil fielded a Premier League front three comprising of Firmino, Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus.

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles came off the bench in stoppage time against Venezuela to make his first appearances since positive for Covid-19 last month.

Diego Carlos and Bruno Guimareas are still waiting to win their first Brazil caps.

Philippe Coutinho, Fabinho, Rodrigo Caio, and Eder Militao all withdrew from the squad last week. Casemiro misses out after recently tested positive for Covid-19. Uncapped defender Gabriel Menino has also withdrawn from the squad after testing positive for Covid-19.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo and Hethra Berlin’s Matheus Cunha were part of last month’s Brazil squad but have not been called up this time.
