Betting tip: Turkey 0-1 Wales

Turkey has to rebound, and fast. A 3-0 humbling by Italy in Rome is a real set-back to Ay-Yildizlilar‘s hopes of reaching the knockout stage, and though changes are expected to be made by manager Senol Günes, Rob Page will fancy Wales chances against a side that created next-to-nothing (3-shots, none on frame against Italy) while producing the type of result that we have seen from them before.

With the onus being placed firmly on Turkey, the tactical situation suits Wales to the ground, and Y Dreigiau is in with a good chance of being just 90-minutes away from reaching the knockout stage at the Euro for the second time in just two tournament appearances.

Wales have scored in six of their seven matches at European Championship finals.

Result/Both Teams to Score: Wales – No

Neither Turkey nor Wales were the better side on matchday one, but Wales certainly left the happier of the two sides and should feel optimistic against a Turkey outfit that was ripped apart at the back against Italy (24-shots allowed) while failing to apply any considerable pressure at the other end (36.6% possession, 3-shots). Likely happy to sit back and counter (35.8% possession against Switzerland), a Welsh clean sheet featuring a goal on the break or a set-piece would hardly be a shock.

Wincast: Gareth Bale to Score 1st/Wales Full-Time Result

Big odds but not out of the realm of possibility. Wales are in a better position to remain true to their preferred tactical schematics after their point against Switzerland, and for a side like Turkey desperate to for a result, they could be ripe to be hit on the break from pacey flank options Gareth Bale or Daniel James should they feature. If Bale is in the mood and Wales put in a typical team performance, this could pay out big.

Turkey vs Wales betting tips: Match preview

There is little to be cheerful about if you are in Turkey’s camp after their matchday one offerings in the Italian capital. Senol Günes’ men suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat (that really could have been even worse on the scoresheet) at the Stadio Olimpico, and anything less than three points against Wales likely consigns them to an early shower at Euro 2020.

Turkey registered just 3-shots in 90-minutes against Roberto Mancini’s impressive outfit and saw less than 40% of the ball in the process. A very good calendar year in 2021 (4-2-0) that included wins against the Netherlands, and Norway, ground to an abrupt halt that should force Günes into tactical changes to get the best out of his brightest attacking talents, chiefly Milan creator-in-chief Hakan Çalhanoglu, who put in a poor performance in Rome.

The former Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder created the most chances in Europe’s top-five leagues in 2020-21, level with Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes (99) while also carving out the most key passes (91), and the most shot-creating actions (154). Bring deployed on the left in a 4-1-4-1 against Italy starved him of the areas in which he thrives, and getting him back into his comfort zone on the pitch could go a long way in aiding Burak Yilmaz in front of goal.

Wales on the brink of second European Championship knockout stage appearance

It was not a brilliant performance, but it was certainly good enough come full-time. Wales fought to a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in a fixture where few would argue the fact that Rob Page’s outfit was second-best throughout, but that same resilience and determination that saw them reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016 was on display in similar measure at Baku’s Olympic Stadium.

Rekindling the magic of 2016 was always going to be difficult once again for a Wales side that – by comparison to the bulk of the nations competing this summer – lacks game-changing quality in considerable amounts. Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey will always draw the eye of the opposition, but it is Wales’ overall team game that has made them effective in tournament play thus far; arguably the most frustrating type of side to come up against in a tournament setting. And they certainly are a side that so often do not need many chances to find a goal, again, something that featured five years ago.

Always having fewer shots than their opposition, and always happy to remain rigid without the ball and direct when on it, Y Dreigiau is in a prime position to frustrate a Turkey that resides in an incredibly desperate situation after their humbling defeat against dark horse outfit Italy. Former Wales captain Ashley Williams reflected on the performance in his column for the BBC and commented on Wales being used to being under pressure, but also highlighting the need for Page to give them just a little bit more when going forward. Simple and succinct, if just a few more quality chances can be squeezed out of this side, Wales could very well reach the knockout stage of Euro 2020 for the second time in just two tournament appearances.

Turkey team news vs Wales

Turkey boss Senol Günes will be looking for an immediate reaction in the aftermath of Turkey’s grubbing perpetrated by an impressive Italy in their opening Group A fixture.

Günes has no fitness concerns to contend with, but big changes may be necessary given how abject Ay-Yildizlilar was in Rome.

Key creative figure Hakan Çalhanoglu may be re-deployed centrally behind target man Burak Yilmaz in an effort to alleviate the impotent attack on matchday one.

Wales team news vs Turkey

Wales interim headmaster Rob Page will be pleased to go into matchday two on the back of a point earned against a difficult Switzerland opponent.

Few changes are expected to the XI that battled back to a 1-1 draw through a Kieffer Moore equalizer, with continuity probably being Y Dreigiau‘s greatest strength.
