Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea betting tips: Carabao Cup semi-final second leg preview, predictions and odds

After the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are firmly in the catbird seat to make it to Wembley.

With just five minutes on the clock, the Blues’ punished Spurs for their slack defending.

Japhet Tanganga’s pass was brilliantly intercepted by Marcos Alonso with his perfectly-weighted through-ball finding Kai Havertz who’s shot deflected in.

Not long after, Havertz nearly had a second when Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s panicked clearance cannoned off Oliver Skipp.

But, that was merely foreshadowing what was to come mere moments later.

Hakim Ziyech whipped in a free-kick that Tanganga, inexplicably, headed onto Ben Davies’ shoulder with the ball ricocheting into the net.

2-0 Chelsea in the most bizarre fashion.

Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner both came close to adding a third but, in the end, just two goals behind, Tottenham are, just about, still in this tie.

Only once in League Cup semi-final history has a side lost the first leg by 2+ goals and made it through.

This was Aston Villa against second-tier Tranmere Rovers in 1994; both legs finished 3-1 to the home side before Villa won the penalty shootout.

Can Spurs defy history and make it two Wembley?

Things are not all hunk-dory at Tottenham right now, despite their results generally being good.

Since Antonio Conte’s arrival, they’ve amassed 18 points from eight league games, winning five and drawing three.

But, the last two have been underwhelming: a 1-1 draw with ten-man Southampton and then a last-gasp 1-0 win at Watford.

Then, on Sunday, they came extremely close to an enormous FA Cup upset.

At home to League One strugglers Morecambe, Spurs fell behind on the half hour mark with the Shrimps still in front going into the final 15.

Nevertheless, Harry Winks’ free-kick, that evaded everybody, restored parity before Lucas and Harry Kane pounced on defensive errors to send them through.

Their reward is a home tie against Brighton & Hove Albion in round four.

But, things have not yet clicked into gear for Conte’s side and this is a huge week with this tie, followed by the visit of Arsenal on Sunday.

Can Spurs pull off a famous comeback and reach the Carabao Cup Final?

Can Chelsea complete the job?

Chelsea in contrast will make the 11.3 mile trip north across London full of confidence after the result a week ago.

The Blues also won 3-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in mid-September but just need to avoid a humbling of their own to win this tie now.

If they do, they’ll reach a fourth final already under Thomas Tuchel, including the UEFA Super Cup, and his one-year anniversary isn’t until the end of the month.

Since the first leg, the Blues have eased into the FA Cup fourth round, swatting aside National League leaders Chesterfield at Stamford Bridge.

Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Romelu Lukaku, Andreas Christensen and then Hakim Ziyech from the penalty spot all on target in the 5-1 win.

Overall, Chelsea could end the season with six major pieces of silverware, with the Super Cup in the bag and the Club World Cup to come next month.

This forthcoming Saturday, their hopes of winning a first Premier League title in five years could effectively end though.

The European champions travel to the Etihad to take on Manchester City, the side currently a whopping ten points above them in the table.

Obviously, playing 62 hours earlier isn’t ideal, especially when Manchester City will have had over a week to prepare for the game.

So, Tuchel will want this second leg to be as uneventful, with the least energy exerted, as possible.

Will the Blues book their ticket to Wembley?

Under Antonio Conte, Spurs have been accused of being defensive, managing a grand total of zero shots of any kind in the first half last Wednesday.

Well, with a two-goal deficit to overturn, that cannot be the case again.

In goal, Hugo Lloris will return after Pierluigi Gollini enjoyed a rare start against Morecambe.

In fact, this’ll be a theme as none of the fringe players who started on Sunday did enough to get into the usual XI.

At the back, Davinson Sánchez will be back alongside Japhet Tanganga and Ben Davies, taking Joe Rodon’s place.

Cristian Romero is a long-term absentee while Eric Dier remains a doubt.

At wing-back, Matt Doherty had almost no positive impact on the first leg, starting on the wrong side over on the left.

But, for this one, Sergio Reguilón will start, if fit, otherwise Ryan Sessegnon will get the nod; both are better options than Doherty.

In the middle, Conte has so far hung his hat on the Pierre-Emile Højbjerg-Olver Skipp axis.

Tanguy Ndombele, who was booed off by his own fans on Sunday, Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele aren’t likely to keep their places.

In attack, Son Heung-min will be out for ‘a number of weeks’ after hobbling off in the first leg.

So, Steven Bergwijn, who could leave the club this month, will complete the front three, alongside Lucas and Harry Kane.

Bryan Gil, who’s played just 736 minutes in a Spurs shirt, 62% of which have come in the Europa Conference League, is the other option.

Will Spurs pull off a remarkable comeback?

As for the visitors, Thomas Tuchel will be thinking clean sheet because if they get one, or even concede just once, they’re through.

In goal, with Édouard Mendy in Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations, Kepa Arrizabalaga is the number one for January.

The Spaniard was actually rested on Saturday with Marcus Bettinelli making his debut for the club against Chesterfield.

In defence, their unavailable list is shrinking with Trevoh Chalobah the only one injured now.

Also, Thiago Silva could be back after contracting Covid-19, alongside Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rüdiger who’ve both been sidelined recently too.

At wing-back though, with no Reece James or Ben Chilwell, they are still short.

Marcos Alonso will continue on the left with the defensive option, captain César Azpilicueta, on the other flank.

In midfield, N’Golo Kanté could be back after a self-isolation period but it’s likely to be Mateo Kovačić and Jorginho in midfield.

Lewis Baker came on for his second Chelsea appearance on the hour mark on Saturday, 2,925 days after his debut for the club against Derby on 5 January 2014.

For context, that side featured Mark Schwarzer, John Obi Mikel, Oscar, Ramires and Samuel Eto’o with Chelsea playing 448 games in the intervening period.

Baker is on course to make his third appearance for Chelsea in the FA Cup third round of 2030, so is unlikely to feature here.

One player who will surely start though is Kai Havertz after a mesmeric showing in the first leg.

The German could form a front three alongside Mason Mount and Romelu Lukaku.

Although, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Timo Werner are all in contention; not bad options to have.

Will the Blues get the required result?
