Swindon Town are back under the spotlight but will they be able to compete with one of the world’s best teams?

The Robins were actually in the Premier League in 1993/94 but they finished bottom and conceded 100 goals, still a competition record.

That though is actually their only season ever in the top-flight and, these days, they reside in League Two having been relegated last season.

So, just to get this far in the FA Cup, they’ve had to win two ties, first beating Crewe Alexandra 3-0 thanks to Louis Reed’s brace.

Then, in the second round, Swindon enjoyed a 2-1 victory over Walsall at Bescot Stadium; Tyreece Simpson and then Kaine Kesler Hayden scoring.

This means they’re through to the FA Cup Third Round for the first time in nine seasons and now get a chance to mix it with the country’s top team.

In the league, Ben Garner’s side are looking to bounce straight back into League One and are in a decent position to do so.

On New Years’ Day, they hammered Northampton Town 5-2 with Harry McKirdy scoring no less than four times.

This is the first time Swindon have scored 5+ in a league game since September 2014 against Sheffield United.

So, the Robins are fifth, just two points behind the last automatic promotion place which is currently occupied by Sutton United.

But, before their next League Two fixture against the side one place below them Port Vale, they face the champions of England.

Will it be a Friday night to remember at the County Ground?

Will Manchester City ease to victory?

As for Manchester City, they’ll merely see this as the first step towards yet more silverware.

Under Pep Guardiola they’ve won two Community Shields, four Carabao Cups, three Premier League titles and this trophy once in 2019.

That was Man City’s sixth FA Cup success with the 2011 win the first silverware of the Abu Dhabi era and the club’s first trophy for 35 years.

Under Guardiola, they’ve only failed to reach the FA Cup semi-finals once in five season, losing in round five to third-tier Wigan in 2018.

That is their only defeat in a cup competition to a side from outside the Premier League in 26 matches, dating back to January 2015.

Once again, it looks like being a case of how many trophies will be donning sky blue ribbons come the end of the season.

On Saturday, in controversial circumstances, Man City came from a goal down to beat Arsenal 2-1 in North London.

Bernardo Silva won a penalty which Riyāḍ Maḥrez converted before, against ten-men, Rodri snatched a 93rd minute equaliser.

So, Guardiola’s side have now won 11 consecutive Premier League games, leaving them ten points above Chelsea and 11 clear of Liverpool.

Many are declaring the title race over and this may well be the case.

Of course, the trophy they really want is the UEFA Champions League, having lost to Chelsea in last season’s final at Estádio do Dragão.

They’ll return to Portugal next month for their round of 16 first leg against Primeira Liga champions Sporting Clube de Portugal.

But, before all of that, can the Premier League champions do it on a wintery night in Wiltshire?

One of the teams in this match has a squad worth close to £1 billion, featuring some of the world’s best players.

Unfortunately for Ben Garner, they won’t be wearing red and he has to pick an XI to contain their Premier League topping visitors.

For much of the season, Swindon were deployed a back three/five but may stick with the 4-4-2 deployed in their last two games.

If nothing else, the Robbins should be well-rested as they’ve only played twice since 11 December with three games having been postponed in this time.

However, they’re without their first-choice goalkeeper Joe Wollacott who’s currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 25 year old started Ghana’s last four World Cup qualifiers so is likely to be their number one for a tournament they’re amongst the favourites to win.

In his unlikely absence, Lewis Ward will be in goal, making just his seventh appearance of the season, four of which have been in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Emmanuel Idem, who joined the club on Tuesday, is the other option.

At centre-back, Dion Conroy missed Saturday’s win so, if he’s still out, Akin Odimayo will continue alongside Rob Hunt.

Jack Payne went off injured in the win over Northampton so is a doubt, meaning Ryan East could come in with Jonny Williams out-wide.

In attack, Harry McKirdy will be their main goal threat, which is an obvious thing to say after he scored four on Saturday, taking his season tally to ten.

Will Swindon cause a monumental upset?

Pep Guardiola meanwhile, for obvious reasons, will heavily rotate his squad, giving fringe and younger players a chance.

This includes in goal where Zack Steffen will enjoy a rare start.

In 2021, he made just 13 club appearances while playing seven times for the United States, including their last three World Cup qualifiers.

At the back, key figures like Rúben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and João Cancelo are almost certainly not going to feature.

Kyle Walker though could start for the first time since beating sent off in Leipzig last month; he’s been injured since then.

Nathan Aké, John Stones and Oleksandr Zinchenko, who’s been out with Covid-19 recently, could compete a back four that cost around £150 million.

Club captain Fernandinho will be at the base of midfield while Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne will all be rested.

Thus, İlkay Gündoğan could start for the first time since Boxing Day, alongside James McAtee.

Cole Palmer could fill the false nine role, as he did in a home win over Everton earlier this season.

Out-wide, Jack Grealish is expected to feature for the first time since being left out the squad against Leicester following a big night out.

On the other flank, Kayky is likely to make his debut after joining from Fluminense in the summer for around £12.5 million.

Even with all the changes, the Sky Blues should demolish the Robbins.
