Spurs vs Southampton: Premier League match preview
Tottenham Hotspur host Southampton at Wembley Stadium on Boxing Day.
Spurs put their 4-1 defeat at Man City behind them and ran riot on Saturday. Harry Kane scored all the goals as Spurs won 3-0 away at Burnley,
The result sees Spurs move back above rivals Arsenal (albeit only on goal difference) and into 5th, one point outside the top four.
Southampton are struggling for form
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Huddersfield Town on Saturday. Southampton were perhaps a bit lucky to end the match with 11 men, as Charlie Austin could’ve been sent off for kicking Jonas Lossl in the face.
Austin opened the scoring in the first half before the Saints conceded in the second period.
Southampton’s winless streak now stretches to six matches. Despite the lack of wins, Southampton have at least managed to score in six of their last seven games.
With that said, only West Brom and Crystal Palace have scored fewer goals on the road this season than Southampton’s five.
Records in sight for Harry Kane
Kane’s 5th Premier League hat-trick saw him equal Alan Shearer’s record for most Premier League goals in a calendar year.
Kane, who has one game remaining in 2017, will want to beat the current record, which currently stands at 36.
Kane is also one goal behind Leo Messi (54) for goals in 2017. This is the final game for Kane this calendar year. Messi has completed his games.
Spurs team news vs Southampton
Former Southampton duo Toby Alderwiereld and Victor Wanyama will both miss out against their old side.
Alderweireld is targeting a return in February, while Wanyama has returned to first team training but is not thought to be close to playing yet.
Harry Winks missed out against Burnley with a minor ankle problem but could return on Boxing Day.
Eric Dier came off early at Burnley, his injury status will determine whether he starts this one.
Former Saints goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga is unlikely to be on the Spurs bench.
Southampton team news vs Spurs
Southampton suffered a major blow on Saturday as leading scorer Austin suffered a hamstring injury. The striker is set “to be out for two or three weeks minimum.”
(Austin has also been charged for violent conduct after kicking Jonas Lossl in the face, and would likely have been suspended for this one anyway.)
Virgil van Dijk was left out at the weekend due to tactical reasons but could return.
First-choice full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares are both injury doubts.
