Sparta Prague vs Celtic: Match preview
Celtic travel to the Czech Republic for their Europa League game against Sparta Prague on Thursday night.
Celtic occupy the bottom spot in Group H at the halfway mark, with just 1 point from three matches. Last time out they suffered a 4-1 defeat at home to Sparta Prague. Lukas Julis scored a hat-trick for the visitors, with substitute Ladislav Krejci adding a fourth. Leigh Griffiths scored a second-half consolation for Celtic.
That was Sparta’s only win and leaves them in 3rd place on 3 points – 3 points behind AC Milan and 4 behind group leaders Lille. Lille host Milan in the other Group H game on Thursday.
Defeat for Celtic on Thursday would leave them at least five points off of second – possibly six points – which would make their chances of qualifying extremely slim.
The Czech Liga has only just resumed following an extended break due to the Coronavirus. Sparta have lost both of their matches since the restart, including Sunday’s 4-2 home defeat to Ceske Budejovice. Despite the two defeats, Sparta remain 2nd in the table, four points behind rivals Slavia Prague.
Celtic were held to a 2-2 away draw at Hibs on Saturday. Celtic came from 2-0 down to earn a point. Odsonne Edouard scored from the penalty spot to halve the deficit before Diego Laxalt netted a stoppage-time winner. Celtic are also 2nd in the table, although they’re 11 points adrift of Rangers.
Including two sides’ meeting at the start of the month, Sparta Prague have faced Scottish opposition 7 times, winning 5, drawing 1 and losing 1. Sparta’s only defeat to a Scottish side was a 2-1 second-leg defeat to Rangers in the 1991-92 European Cup.
Celtic’s record against Czech sides is less impressive, with 2 wins from 5 matches.
Sparta Prague team news vs Celtic
Sparta Prague manager Vaclav Kotal has a number of injury concerns in his squad, particularly in defence. David Hancko, who started at left-back in the reverse fixture, is expected to miss out with a knee problem. Ondrej Celustka is another doubt with a muscle injury.
Midfielders Michal Sacek and Ladislav Krejci are both likely to miss out after suffering muscle injuries in the recent defeat to Viktoria Plzen. Sacek started the match at Celtic Park, while Krejci came off the bench to score Sparta’s fourth goal.
Curiously, Sparta Prague have another midfielder named Ladislav Krejci (nicknamed Krejci II) who is expected to start.
17-year-old Adam Karabec started in the reverse fixture and could keep his place in the number 10 role.
David Pavelka was shown a red card against Ceske Budejovice on Sunday but that won’t impact his involvement on Thursday night.
Former Aston Villa striker Libor Kozak has not featured since picking up a knock in October’s 3-0 defeat in Milan.
Lukas Stetina is sidelined with a long-term knee injury and is not expected back until March. Adam Hlozek is another long-term absentee.
Celtic team news vs Sparta Prague
Midfielder David Turnbull is set to miss out after testing positive for Covid-19.
Neil Lennon doesn’t have any other injury doubts heading into Thursday’s game. There were concerns over the fitness of Jeremie Frimpong but he played the full 90 against Hibs on Saturday.
Odsonne Edouard was largely ineffective last time out against Sparta. Leigh Griffiths came off the bench to score Celtic’s only goal of the game and could be handed a start. Olivier Ntcham and Albian Ajeti will also come into Lennon’s thinking.
