Southampton vs Crystal Palace: Premier League preview
Few predicted Southampton would escape Old Trafford with a point. Especially after the 5-2 defeat at Tottenham on Boxing Day.
Yet for all the goodwill Mauricio Pellergrino earned at United, Southampton need to beat Palace to secure a happy new year.
The Saints haven’t won in eight matches, not since a 4-1 win over Everton at the end of November.
Those poor run of results have left Southampton just one point above Palace in the table.
Remember, the Eagles gave all 19 clubs in the league a 7 game head start this season after their horrific opening losing run.
While Southampton’s United point was surprising, Crystal Palace should have gained three points against City.
Wilfried Zaha won a late penalty against the league leaders, but Luka Milivojevic’s spot-kick was saved by Ederson.
Yet the City result still felt like a win for the Eagles. Roy Hodgson seems to have Palace pointed in the right direction, even if they are fourth bottom.
Palace have lost just once in 10 Premier League matches and they can move up to 13th this week if results go their way.
But how much will they still have left in the tank after just one day’s rest?
Southampton team news vs Crystal Palace
Charlie Austin continues to miss out after a three game suspension. However he’s also injured, so it’s unclear when Austin will actually return.
Cedric Soares is also out of the Palace game with an ankle injury.
There’s a chance Ryan Bertrand returns against the Eagles. Although the England international would likely start on the bench.
And then there’s the issue of who will be in goal. Fraser Forster was dropped against United, and after Alex McCarthy recorded a clean sheet he’s surely set to start again.
Crystal Palace team news vs Southampton
The point against City came at a high cost for the Eagles.
Already without key defenders Joel Ward and Mamadou Sakho, Scott Dann was injured on Sunday. He’s likely to be a long term absentee.
Jason Puncheon was also injured against City after he took out Kevin De Bruyne.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jeffrey Schlupp both sat out the City game. They are set for midweek recalls.
Conor Wickham remains a long term absentee.
