Sheffield United vs Plymouth Argyle: Match preview

This Saturday’s trip to Bramall Lane will be Plymouth’s 4th match in the FA Cup so far this season. They have defeated 3 sides above them in English football’s structure and will hope to make it 4 here.

They defeated Charlton and Lincoln in the 1st and 2nd rounds of the competition. Both sides are above Plymouth in League One this season with eyes on promotion while Plymouth are around mid-table.

However, coming from behind to beat Championship side Huddersfield in the 3rd round is their biggest scalp in the competition this season. So far at least.

For Sheffield United, it is only their 2nd match in the FA Cup this season having previously eliminated Bristol Rovers. The fact that they made such hard work of a side battling against relegation from League One will give some confidence to Plymouth.

Many were curious whether Chris Wilder would see the FA Cup as a distraction from his desperate battle to keep the Blades in the Premier League. Or, if he would see it as a welcome opportunity for his players to find some form against easier opponents which he could carry into the league campaign.

The fact he picked an almost full-strength side for the 3rd Round to get his team’s first win in a competitive match this season answered those question. Following up the 2-3 win over Bristol Rovers with a 1-0 win against Newcastle in the Premier League would suggest his approach was the correct one also.

Can Sheffield United keep their cup run going to breathe some life into a team fighting to stay in the Premier League? Or will Plymouth claim their biggest scalp yet in this season’s FA Cup?

Sheffield United team news vs Plymouth Argyle

Jack O’Connell remains ruled out for this season following an operation on his knee.

Sander Berge is also on the long-term injury list after an operation on his tendon. He is expected to be out for another 2-3 months.

Oliver McBurnie has been struggling with injuries for over a month now. But he could return in this match.

Jack Robinson is the only other player ruled out for the Blades at present. Although, no specific information has been provided on his injury by the club.

Ben Osborn and Lys Mousset both missed out on the 1-3 defeat against Spurs with knocks. They probably won’t be risked here but could return for the trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Plymouth Argyle team news vs Sheffield United FC

Niall Canavan won’t be available for Plymouth having completed a move to Bradford on loan earlier this month.

Likewise, Timmy Abraham, brother of Chelsea forward Tammy, will not be available having returned to Fulham after completion of his loan contract.

However, their ranks are bolstered by two new arrivals. Niall Ennis joins the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 21-year-old forward made his debut for the club at the weekend in a 15-minute cameo from the bench. He could get his first start for the club here.

Adam Lewis made his full debut at the weekend after joining the club on loan from Liverpool. The 20-year-old left-back had spent the first half of this season on loan to French club Amiens in Ligue 2.

Lewis MacLeod, Panutche Camara, and Byron Moore were all left out of the squad for the trip to Sunderland on Tuesday. Plymouth will hope the trio are available for Saturday to give them further options against a superior opponent.
