Senegal vs Cape Verde: Match preview

To say Senegal’s games at this month’s Africa Cup of Nations have been uneventful is a massive understatement.
In their opener, Aliou Cissé’s side really struggled against minnows Zimbabwe, needing a Sadio Mané penalty in the 97th minute to snatch a 1-0 win.
That would prove to be the height of their group stages excitement, subsequently drawing 0-0 with both Guinea and then Malawi.
The meant, despite scoring just once from eight shots on target, les Lions de la Téranga topped Group B, earning this favourable first knockout round tie.
In their history, Senegal are the only country to reach multiple AFCON Finals without ever winning one, losing to Cameroon in 2002 and Algeria three years ago.
So, they came into this year’s edition with high hopes but those expectations have certainly been dampened by their underwhelming displays thus far.
Will Cissé’s team spark into life as the knockout phase begins?
Cape Verde meanwhile are competing in their third Africa Cup of Nations, reaching the quarter-finals in 2013 before a group stage exit two years later.
This month, the Blue Sharks got off to the perfect start by beating ten-man Ethiopia 1-0 with Júlio Tavares on target.
Bubista’s team actually lost 1-0 to Burkina Faso before holding Cameroon to a 1-1 draw, Garry Rodrigues equalising, to ensure they got through as a best-ranked third-place finisher.
Cape Verde are now looking to win an AFCON knockout phase match for the very first time, but do come into this one as big underdogs.
Will Senegal be too strong at Kouekong Stadium, thereby setting up a quarter-final clash against Equatorial Guinea or Mali?

Based on the group stages, it’s obvious that goal scoring is the biggest problem for Aliou Cissé’s side but they certainly don’t lack attacking talent.
Sadio Mané is their superstar but Keita Baldé Diao, Boulaye Dia and Habib Diallo are all candidates to complete a dangerous front three.
Watford’s Ismaïla Sarr hasn’t featured at all yet at this tournament after only just returning from injury.
Cheikhou Kouyaté, who usually anchors midfield, is suspended having picked up two yellow cards in their last two games.
So, alongside Idrissa Gana Gueye and Nampalys Mendy in a very functional midfield, Pape Gueye could deputise.
At the other end, of course, their defensive record is very impressive.
This is largely thanks to Édouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly who are, probably, the best goalkeeper and centre-back a this tournament respectively.
Both will be key if Senegal are to be crowned Africa champions for the very first time.

Cape Verde’s squad certainly does not feature the same volume of familiar faces and world class talent.
Garry Rodrigues is their best attacker, bagging his seventh international goal off the bench against Cameroon in their last match.
The 31 year old has previously played for Elche, PAOK, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, joining Greek champions Olympiacos last September.
Overall, their 28-man squad is made up of players of 25 clubs, from 17 different countries.
This ranges from Roberto Lopes, who’s won two Irish league titles at Shamrock Rovers, to Jamiro Monteiro who, with Philadelphia Union, lifted the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2020.
Their midfield general, who might be worth keeping an eye out for, is Patrick Andrade who plays for Azerbaijani giants Qarabağ.
Can Cape Verde cause a big upset?
