Riga FC vs Celtic Glasgow: Match details

Match: Riga FC vs Celtic Glasgow

Competition: UEFA Europa League

Date: September 24, 2020

Kick-off time: 6:00 pm, September 24, 2020 (UK time)

Stadium: Skonto

Betting prediction: Riga FC 0-3 Celtic Glasgow

Riga welcomes Celtic to the Skonto Stadium in Latvia on Thursday for this UEFA Europa League match. The winner will progress to the Qualifier Round Playoffs.

This will be the first time Riga have faced a Scottish side in competitive action.

The furthest Riga have got in the Europa League is the Qualifier Round Playoffs. Last season, they were eliminated by Copenhagen in the Playoffs 2-3 on aggregate.

This is also Celtic’s first time facing a Latvian team in competitive European football.

Celtic are the much more experienced and highly decorated side of the two. They famously won the European Cup in 1966/67. The Hoops were also runners up of this competition in 2003/04.

Coincidentally, Celtic also had their Europa League run ended by Copenhagen last season. They were defeated 2-4 on aggregate in the Round of 32.

Riga FC vs Celtic Glasgow: What are the betting odds?

Riga defeated Tre Fiori of San Marino at home to get to the third qualifying round. Despite home advantage, their odds of 10/1 suggest not many are expecting another home win here.

Glasgow Celtic have drawn one of their four away matches this season; a 1-1 draw at Kilmarnock. Odds of 11/2 are available if you see Riga and Celtic cancelling each other out on Thursday.

Celtic have won three matches in a row coming into this knockout fixture. They are the 2/9 favourites to advance to the Qualifier Round Playoffs by defeating Riga in normal time.

Riga FC vs Celtic Glasgow: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Riga 0-3 Celtic is available at odds of 13/2.

Riga’s last home victory in this competition was a 1-0 versus Tre Fiori of San Marino. A repeat of this scoreline on Thursday is available at odds of 28/1.

Celtic’s last away win was a 0-5 hammering of Ross County two weeks ago. You can back them at 18/1 for another 0-5 drumming on Thursday.

The Hoops’ matches this season have been typically high scoring. They have had over 2.5 goals in all but 2 of their 9 games. You can back another high scoring game here on Thursday with odds of 8/15 for over 2.5 goals.

Celtic have kept four clean sheets already this season. They are 4/5 to add another on Thursday evening.

Riga FC vs Celtic Glasgow: Match preview

This Europa League match is something of a second chance saloon for both Riga and Celtic. Both sides were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League Qualifying Rounds already this season.

Riga suffered a 2-0 defeat in Tel Aviv against Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv in the First Qualifying Round. The Latvians would have been unhappy to go out conceding two penalties, both of which were converted by Bury-born Nick Blackman.

Celtic got past KR Reykjavík in the First Qualifying Round, hammering the Icelandic side 6-0. They met Ferencváros of Hungary in the Second Qualifying Round, losing 1-2 at home.

It was a very frustrating night for the Scottish Champions, having 71% of possession and getting 28 of their 39 shots on target. To only score 1 from that number of shots is either miraculous goalkeeping, awful finishing, or a bit of both.

Thursday night will likely see a repeat of that match-up tactically. Celtic will dominate the ball and shot-count. The question will be, will we see another night of frustration in Latvia as it was against Ferencváros. Or, will they tear Riga apart as they did KR Reykjavík.

Riga FC team news vs Celtic Glasgow

Antonijs Cernomordijs, a 23-year-old central defender, has been out for Riga since mid-August. Herdi Prenga and Elvis Stuglis started against Tre Fiori in defence and are expected to remain there.

Roman Debelko is the only other absentee due to injury. The 27-year-old forward has been out since the end of July. Kule Mbombo will likely lead the line in his absence, as he did at the weekend.

Stefan Panic wasn’t involved in Riga’s 1-0 win against Valmiera at the weekend. He was serving a one-match suspension for accumulated yellow cards. Panic is expected to return in defensive midfield in place of Sharpar.

A number of regular starters were rested at the weekend. Felipe Brisola, Ritvars Rugins and Vladimirs Kamess are all expected to return to the squad here, if not the starting XI.

Celtic Glasgow team news vs Riga FC

Leigh Griffiths has been absent so far this campaign due to injury. He rolled his ankle in a pre-season friendly against Hibernian. While he is back in training, he likely plays no part on Thursday as he works his way back to fitness.

Mikey Johnston has also missed every game for the Hoops, due to a knee problem.

Boli Bolingoli broke Coronavirus quarantine rules resulting in recent matches against St Mirren and Aberdeen being postponed. He was subsequently dropped and has since been sold to Istanbul Basaksehir FK in Turkey.

Odsonne Edouard was rested at the weekend for Celtic’s 3-2 win against Livingston. Albian Ajeti, who was recently signed from West Ham for £5m, started instead. Neil Lennon has to make a choice on which of the two will lead the line here.

Christopher Jullien missed the match at the weekend against Livingston. Jullien picked up a knock in training last week. He is expected to come back into the starting XI here.
