Rangers vs St Mirren betting tips: Scottish Premiership match preview and predictions

Rangers vs St Mirren prediction: Rangers 3-0 St Mirren

Rangers’ first home league game of the Steven Gerrard era and Gers fans can’t wait to welcome their new hero home.

However, St Mirren are optimistic too and are loving life back in the big time.

Will Rangers get their first league win or the season or can St Mirren pull off a shock first win at Ibrox since 1991?

With Celtic losing on Saturday, can Rangers take advantage of the slip-up by their bitter rivals?

Rangers vs St Mirren: Who will win?

Unsurprisingly, Rangers are heavy favourites. They are 1/3 to get their first league win of the season.

St Mirren are big underdogs and that’s reflected by the fact they are 5/2 to win.

I’m sure Alan Stubbs would be happy with a draw which is 17/4.

Alfredo Morelos scored the opening goal on Thursday and is 3/1 to score first and 5/6 to score .

Danny Mullen has already scored 3 goals this season including both in their league opener last weekend. He is 10/1 to score first and 3/1 to score anytime.

It could be a big home win and Rangers to win and over 2.5 goals is priced at 8/11.

Rangers vs St Mirren: Match preview

Despite the fact that this is only the second league game of the season, both sides have already been busy in cup competitions.

Rangers have participated in five games in Europa League qualifying. They’ve already seen off Macedonian side Shkupi and Osijek from Croatia.

As recently as Thursday, Ibrox played host to their first leg with Maribor. It finished 3-1 which leaves Rangers in a great position as they head to Slovenia for next Thursday’s second leg.

Their league season didn’t get off to the best start last Sunday.

When Alfredo Morelos was sent off after just 12 minutes it was always going to be a tough afternoon at Pittodrie.

However, when James Tavernier dispatched a penalty midway through the first half, it looked as though they were going to come away with an amazing victory.

They held on until the third minute of second half stoppage time and the late equaliser was a hard one to take.

Can they avenge that and get their first win on the board under Gerrard?

The Saints started superbly

As for St Mirren, they romped to the Championship title last season and appear to be loving life back in the top division.

They began their season with the Scottish League Cup group stage.

Despite draws with Kilmarnock, Spartans and Queens Park they won all 3 penalty shootouts to give them a decent chance of getting through.

A 6-0 win over League 1 Dumbarton was enough to see them squeak through as one of the 4 best runners up.

They started their Premiership season with a winnable looking home game at home to Dundee.

Their visitors were wasteful throughout and the Saints were able to take advantage. A calamitous error by the Dundee keeper with just 8 minutes to go gifted Danny Mullen a dramatic winner.

Its games like these at Ibrox that makes all the hard work getting promoted worth it, so can Alan Stubbs’ side rise to the occasion?

Rangers team news vs St Mirren

Gerrard still has some long term absentees. Wes Foderigham, Lee Wallace, Jordan Rossiter and Graham Dorrans are not expected back for a number of weeks.

Josh Windass left the club to join Wigan Athletic on Thursday for £2.5 million.

Alfredo Morelos was sent off at Pittodrie but, after an successful appeal, he is available.

Croatian left back Borna Barišić, who joined the club from NK Osijek on Tuesday, could be set for a debut.

Gerrard has picked the same back 4 for all 6 games he’s had so far and may decide to rest one or two.

Scott Arfield is only just coming back from an injury and might be rested with Thursday in mind.

St Mirren team news vs Rangers

After an opening day win, Alan Stubbs looks set to pick the same team again.

Jordan Kirkpatrick, Adam Eckersley and Gary MacKenzie remain sidelined.

Matty Willock, on loan from Manchester United, impressed last Saturday and will be key to their chances of getting anything at Ibrox.

Danny Mullen is their top scorer with 3 this season but would love another one at one of Scotland’s most historic grounds.
