Rangers vs Royal Antwerp: Match preview
Rangers’ impressive Europa League campaign continued last Thursday as they defeated a strong Royal Antwerp side 4-3 in Belgium.
Borna Barisic netted a penalty in the last minute of normal time to clinch the win for Steven Gerrard’s side.
They now take a lead and four away goals back Glasgow leaving the Belgian side needing to produce a strong win this week.
Antwerp either need to win by two goals or at least match Rangers’ four away goals, which will be a tough ask at Ibrox.
The SPFL leaders are so far undefeated in all competitions at home and have not conceded more than two goals in one game.
Rangers will be desperate to get through this round with their full focus set to turn to the Europa League with the Scottish title close to being sewn up.
The Glasgow club are now just seven points away from claiming their first league title in ten years following a 4-1 win over Dundee United at the weekend.
Royal Antwerp look set to finish as runners up in the Belgian Pro League.
They were held to a disappointing goalless draw with strugglers STVV on the weekend but remain on course to better last season’s fourth-place finish.
Rangers team news vs Royal Antwerp
Rangers were dealt a big injury blow in Antwerp as captain and top scorer James Tavernier was forced off with an injury.
The right-back’s knee injury is not as bad as originally feared but he is set to miss the next couple of weeks.
Tavernier has 11 goals and 10 assists this season, playing a key role in their climb to the top of the SPFL and their route to Europa League knockout stages.
Kemar Roofe joins Tavernier on the sidelines as he too picked up a knock in the first-leg.
Roofe is the club’s second-highest goalscorer this season behind Tavernier and the duo being unavailable wipes out a large source of goals.
Ryan Jack is another big player who will be missing on Thursday after he suffered a calf injury against Dundee United on the weekend.
Royal Antwerp team news vs Rangers
Antwerp’s hopes of overturning the deficit have been dealt a big blow with top scorer Dieumerci Mbokani being ruled out of the trip to Ibrox.
The striker returned from an injury on the weekend but he was again forced and is not in the squad for Thursday.
January signing Felipe Avenatti filled in for Mbokani in the first-leg and having found the back of the net, he is likely to start again in Glasgow.
The Belgian side will also be without central defender Abdoulaye Seck who was sent off in the first-leg.
