Rangers vs Maribor betting tips: Europa League qualifying match preview and predictions

Rangers vs Maribor prediction: Rangers 1-0 Maribor

The European dream is still alive for Steven Gerrard and Rangers.

Victories over Shkupi and Osijek mean they have now won back to back European ties for the first time in over 10 years.

As recently as 2011, these two met in a Europa League play off. Maribor won the first leg at home 2-1 before a 1-1 draw at Ibrox saw Rangers crash out.

Will The Gers get their revenge this time?

Rangers vs Maribor: Who will win?

Rangers are 4/7 to qualify overall and Maribor are 5/4.

Alfredo Morelos will be desperate to score after his (now rescinded) red card at Pittodrie on Sunday. He is 7/2 to score first and 6/4 to score anytime.

Rangers vs Maribor: Match Preview

Rangers haven’t competed in a European group stage since 2010 but are now half way to reaching that.stage again.

Their success in Europe this season has been built on a solid defence that has only conceded once so far.

In the last round, a very impressive 1-0 away win in Croatia set them up nicely for the return game at Ibrox.

When Nikola Katić headed in his first goal for the club they seemed to be cruising through. However, Osijek did get one back in the final minute but couldn’t get another and the Scottish side went through.

Maribor should provide another step up in quality so can Rangers impress again?

That’s because, the 14 time Slovenian champions have far more recent European experience than their hosts.

They got all the way to the Champions League group stages last season. Wins over Zrinjski Mostar, FH and Hapoel Be’er-Sheva saw them get there for only the third time in their history.

Once there, they achieved impressive draws with Spartak Moscow home and away and with Spanish giants Sevilla, but finished winless and bottom of the group.

That European experience could stand them in good stead as they head for, what will be, a raucous Ibrox.

Rangers team news vs Maribor

Gerrard still has some long term absentees. Wes Foderigham, Lee Wallace, Jordan Rossiter and Graham Dorrans are not expected back for a number of weeks.

Scott Arfield is back in contention though. He was on the bench last Thursday and started in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Aberdeen and could be a vital player for them.

Croatian left back Borna Barišić, who joined the club from NK Osijek on Tuesday, could make his debut.

However, their back 4 is very settled and Gerrard is unlikely to drop Jon Flanagan who has performed well. The defence will have to be solid once again if they are to avoid conceding as a clean sheet in this first leg could be so vital.

Maribor team news vs Rangers

Darko Milanič does have some injury problems ahead of their trip to Glasgow.

The absence of both Martin Milec and Denis Šme means they are left with a slight right back crisis. Šme suffered a achilles tendon injury two weeks ago in their first leg in Georgia and is going to be sidelined for some time.

As a result of this, they’ve signed Denis Klinar from Puskás Akadémia in Hungary and he is set to make his debut for the club.

Maribor will be for sure the strongest team Rangers have faced this season. But, with the home crowd behind them, they should have enough to take a lead to Slovenia for next week.

The winners of this tie will play FC UFA from Russia or Progrès Niederkorn of Luxembourg in the fourth and final qualifying round.

It was the side from Luxembourg who eliminated Rangers last season, could we be in for a rematch?
