Rangers vs Galatasaray: Match details

Match: Rangers vs Galatasaray

Competition: UEFA Europa League

Date: October 1, 2020

Kick-off time: 7:45 pm, October 1, 2020 (UK time)

Stadium: Ibrox

Betting prediction: Rangers 2-1 Galatasaray

Rangers could not be in better form heading into the match. They are unbeaten in 11 matches in all competitions this season, winning nine of those. They’ve scored 20 goals in their last five matches, and conceded just three in their last 11.

Galatasaray have also made a good start to their campaign, winning four and drawing one of their five matches so far. The Turkish side have only won two of their last eight away games in all competitions.

It’s likely to be a close game and could easily go either way. Rangers have only lost one of their last 18 home matches in the Europa League and will be hoping to make the most of their home ground advantage, even if there won’t any fans.

Rangers vs Galatasaray: Recommended bets

Both teams to score. Although Rangers’ defence has looked great, it’ll be a tall order to keep a shutout against Galatasaray.

Over 2.5 goals. Rangers have been scoring goals for fun lately. Each of their last five matches have produced at least four goals.

James Tavernier to score. Tavernier has scored six goals in his last six appearances and is also on penalty duty for Rangers.

Rangers vs Galatasaray: Match preview

Rangers host Galatasaray at Ibrox on Thursday night. The winners of the one-legged tie will earn a spot in this season’s Europa League group stage.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, who won the competition as a Liverpool player, has admitted that Galatasaray are the favourites. “They are certainly coming to Ibrox as favourites, for sure,” he said.

The Glaswegian side entered at the second qualifying round. They easily saw off Lincoln Red Imps with a 5-0 win in Gibraltar before thrashing Willem II 4-0 in the Netherlands last week.

Rangers enjoyed a decent run in last season’s competition. Having entered in the first qualifying round, they went all the way to the last 16, eventually being knocked out by Bayer Leverkusen.

Rangers have made a solid start to their domestic campaign. Steven Gerrard’s side are currently first in the Scottish Premiership, one point above rivals Celtic after nine matches played (although Celtic have a game in hand).

Rangers were 5-1 winners at Motherwell on Sunday, with James Tavernier (2), Jordan Jones, and Cedric Itten (2) all on the scoresheet.

Galatasaray beat Azerbaijani side Neftci 3-1 in the second qualifying round before beating Hajduk Split 2-0 last week.

Last season Galatasaray played in the Champions League but were eliminated early on after finishing bottom of their group, which featured Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Galatasaray are third in the Turkish Super Lig after three matches. They were held to a 0-0 draw by rivals Fenerbahce on Sunday.

The tie could also have future implications for the UEFA coefficient – the ranking which determines automatic Champions League spots. Scotland are currently ranked one position below Turkey in the UEFA coefficient and a win on Thursday night could help change that.

Thursday’s match will be Rangers’ seventh against Turkish opposition. Their record up until now reads: Played 6, won 2, drawn 2, lost 2.

The two sides met 20 years ago in the Group Stage of the Champions League. A 0-0 draw at Ibrox was followed up with a 3-2 home win for Galatasaray in Istanbul. Andrei Kanchelskis and Giovanni van Bronckhorst netted for Rangers on that evening back in 2000.

Galatasaray went on to win the tournament (then known as the UEFA Cup) that season, beating Arsenal in the final.

Rangers team news vs Galatasaray

Steven Gerrard is likely to field a similar side to the one which beat Willem II.

Jermain Defoe was an unused substitute but could be an alternative to Scott Arfield up front. Cedric Itten will also come into consideration following his goals at the weekend.

Galatasaray team news vs Rangers

Fatih Terim did not play his strongest side in the previous round and it’s unclear how much that’ll change on Thursday.

Younes Belhanda, Omar Elabdellaoui, Radamel Falcao and Arda Turan did not start against Split and could be called upon if needed.

One of Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammates, Ryan Babel, is expected to start out wide.
