Scotland’s big two go head to head for the fourth time this season but have managed to draw each other in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

Celtic dominated Scottish football in the last decade but this season has been all about Rangers.

On 7 March, Rangers’ 55th league title and first for ten years was confirmed.

Steven Gerrard’s side have actually continued their unbeaten Premiership campaign since then too, including wins over Celtic in October and January.

Their most recent meeting was just four weeks ago, finishing 1-1 at Parkhead; Mohamed Elyounoussi opened the scoring before Alfredo Morelos equalised.

The Gers are now actually unbeaten in four Old Firms, last going undefeated in five in a row between 2006 and 2008.

But, most importantly, their focus is on securing the league and cup double.

Gerrard is looking to win his first domestic cup as a manager after his side were beaten 3-2 at St Mirren Park in the League Cup quarter-finals in December.

Rangers have dominated this fixture this season so will it be they who progress to a fifth round tie against St Johnstone or Clyde?

Will Celtic continue their cup quest?

Celtic meanwhile are looking to salvage something from this season.

Their campaigns in the Premiership, League Cup, Champions League and Europa League have all been catastrophic.

Indeed, the only highpoint has been beating Heart of Midlothian on penalties, after a 3-3 draw, to win the 2020 Scottish Cup.

This means they’ve now won four successive Scottish Cups, becoming the first team ever to do this in the competition’s 148 year history.

Now, this competition provides their last chance of avoiding a first trophyless season since 2009/2010.

Belatedly, the Hoops have found some form coming into this game.

Last weekend, they hammered Livingston 6-0 at Paradise; James Forrest, David Turnbull, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Ryan Christie scoring.

This means they’ve won two out of two this month after swatting aside Falkirk 3-0 in the third round.

The win over Livi secured second spot in the Premiership, meaning John Kennedy’s side can give this Scottish Cup campaign everything.

Celtic’s last defeat in this competition was in the 2016 semi-finals, losing to then Champions Rangers on penalties at Hampden after a 2-2 draw.

Callum McGregor, Scott Brown and Tom Rogic, all still at the club, missing in the shootout.

Will Celtic avoid their first Scottish Cup defeat for 1,827 days?

Alfredo Morelos

Rangers are not at full strength coming into this tie but will be able to put out a strong side.

Allan McGregor will be in goal having kept 20 clean sheets in 38 appearances this season, conceding just 28 goals.

In defence, captain James Tavernier hasn’t played since 18 February in Antwerp so Nathan Patterson will continue to deputise at right-back.

Patterson may be banned soon for breaking Covid-19 protocols but his appeal won’t be heard until Tuesday.

Borna Barišić and Connor Goldson will also be apart of the back four with Filip Helander also starting at centre-back due to Nikola Katić and Leon Balogun being injured.

In midfield, Ryan Jack is also out.

So, Glen Kamara will anchor the midfield alongside Steven Davis; Bongani Zungu is the alternative.

Gerrard could go for the more attacking option of Joe Aribo further forward with Scott Arfield left out.

Out-wide, Kemar Roofe and Ryan Kent will keep their places ahead of Scott Wright and Ianis Hagi

Alfredo Morelos will lead the line having scored his first Glasgow derby goal in last month’s match.

Jermain Defoe will be on the bench after scoring his 282nd in the third round against Cove Rangers.

Will Rangers progress to round five?

As for Celtic, after last weekend’s thumping victory, there’s no reason for John Kennedy to change anything.

Scott Bain is firmly the number one goalkeeper ahead of summer signing Vasilis Barkas.

In defence, they’re short of options.

With Christopher Jullien a long-term absentee and Shane Duffy out of favour, 21-year-old Stephen Welsh will continue alongside Kristoffer Ajer.

Nir Bitton will be on the bench after being sent off at Ibrox in January.

At full-back, Everton loanee Jonjoe Kenny will continue on the right.

On the other side, Greg Taylor has won back his place ahead of another loanee, Diego Laxalt, who’ll return to A.C. Milan at the end of the season.

In midfield, Kennedy is likely to continue with a diamond featuring Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and player of the season so far David Turnbull.

James Forrest came back in the third round tie against Falkirk having not played since the win in Rīga in September before this.

However, his availability is unknown after hobbling off against Livingston.

So, Ryan Christie, who came off the bench to score in that one, could come in.

Tom Rogic, who’s previously scored five derby goals, is the other option.

Up front, Mohamed Elyounoussi, who netted in last month’s clash, will start alongside Odsonne Édouard.

Leigh Griffiths and Albian Ajeti will be on the bench but Patryk Klimala is unlikely to be as he’s reportedly set to join New York Red Bulls for £3.5 million.

Will Celtic, somewhat, save the season with a victory here?
