Rangers vs Brøndby: Match preview

Rangers vs Brøndby betting tips: Europa League preview, predictions and odds

It’s approaching must win time for Rangers in the Europa League after a very disappointing start to this group phase campaign.

On matchday one, Olympique Lyonnais were simply too good, winning 2-0 at Ibrox with James Tavernier’s unfortunate own goal sealing the deal.

By far the more damaging of the two results so far though came a fortnight later as the Gers were beaten again, this time 1-0 by Sparta Praha.

The only goal at Generali Česká pojišťovna Arena came on the half hour mark in a game overshadowed by yet more racist abuse directed at Glen Kamara.

So, the Scottish Champions sit bottom of Group A with no points on the board and not even a goal having been scored.

Before this season, they’d lost just six of 45 European matches under Steven Gerrard.

Now though, having also lost both legs of their Champions League qualifier to Malmö, it’s four defeats and just one win in Europe in this campaign.

Only a top three finish is required to secure post-Christmas European football with third-place going into the Europa Conference League.

But, Rangers need to win this one to get off the bottom at the half way mark.

Their underwhelming form hasn’t just been confined to UEFA competitions though.

On Saturday, an error from Allan McGregor saw Heart of Midlothian snatch a 90th minute equaliser to draw 1-1 at Ibrox.

Rangers are top of the Premiership, with 20 points from nine games, but Hearts, Dundee United, Celtic, and Hibs are all within five points of the leaders.

After setting such high standards last season, Gerrard’s side have come nowhere near to hitting those levels again.

Will their season ignite into life with a win on a big European night?

Will Brøndby add to Rangers’ misery?

Brondby

Brøndby meanwhile are delighted to be back in European competition but aren’t here just to make up the numbers.

Last season, the Boys from Vestegnen won their first Superligaen title for 16 years, finishing just one point above Midtjylland.

This saw them enter into the Champions League play-off round where they were outclassed by RB Salzburg, losing both meetings 2-1.

Still, they dropped into just a third UEFA group stage after the Champions League in 1998 and the UEFA Cup of 2005.

Niels Frederiksen’s side are the lowest-ranked of all 32 clubs in the group phase but started by holding Sparta Prague to a goalless draw.

A fortnight later, they held on for over an hour but eventually lost 3-0 at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

So, the Danish champions are currently above their Scottish counterparts despite also having not scored yet.

Having finished fourth in their two previous group stages, Brøndby are dreaming of knockout football for the first time since reaching the UEFA Cup quarters in 96/97.

A win in Glasgow would be a gigantic step towards securing that, even if only in the Europa Conference League.

At the weekend, they came from behind not once but twice, before eventually beating bottom of the table Vejle Boldklub 3-2.

22 year old American Christian Cappis with the winner.

However, that was just their third win in the Superligaen, from 12 games, leaving them down in sixth, 13 points adrift of Midtjylland.

Brøndby’s last six European away games have all resulted in defeat.

So, will they win on the road in Europe for the first time since beating Spartak Subotica in Serbia in 2018?

Steven Gerrard was short of defenders for matchday two’s defeat in Prague but should have more options available for this one.

Allan McGregor is likely to continue in goal, despite his error on Saturday, meaning Jon McLaughlin will remain on the bench.

In front of him, without Filip Helander there are limited options but so it’ll be Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun again.

At left-back, Borna Barišić appears to have won his place back from Calvin Bassey.

In midfield, Glen Kamara missed all four qualifying matches through suspension and is suspended again after being sent off in Prague.

Ryan Jack is also still out so Steven Davis will come in alongside the weekend scorer John Lundstram.

Further forward, Kemar Roofe could be recalled, at Scott Wright’s expense, completing an attacking trio alongside Joe Aribo and Ianis Hagi.

Ryan Kent is an injury doubt which would be a big blow.

In attack, Alfredo Morelos is Rangers’ record European goalscorer of all time but was left on the bench on matchday two.

Nevertheless, the Colombian will surely start this one with Fashion Sakala back amongst the substitutes.

Will Rangers climb off the bottom of Group A with a win?

Niels Frederiksen’s side meanwhile have played a back three in all but one of their 17 matches so far this season.

Thomas Mikkelsen started in goal at the weekend but regular number one Mads Hermansen will surely return here.

At the back, Henrik Heggheim will come in alongside Sigurd Rosted and captain Andreas Maxsø.

Josip Radošević is their experienced head in midfield.

Mikael Uhre could get the nod in attack, partnering Andrija Pavlović.

Uhre got the opener in their best European performance, so far, away to RB Salzburg in the Champions League play-off round.

Will Brøndby leave Glasgow with a, potentially, decisive win?
