Defending European champions Portugal will be looking to end their Euro 2020 preparations on a high note before they go begin the defence of their title.

Israel failed to qualify for Euro 2020 but have found relatively solid form in recent months, picking up big wins over Montenegro, Moldova, and Scotland.

Portugal are ranked 5th in the FIFA World Rankings, while Israel come in at a disappointing 87th.

Os Navegadores have the upper hand in the head-to-head with 3 wins to Israel’s 1. Although, in competitive matches, these nations have 1 win apiece and 2 draws.

Portugal’s recent form has been a mixed bag, with 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat from their last 6 international matches. They are unbeaten in their last 5 matches, in all competitions.

Israel’s form has been similar, following 3 wins, a draw and 2 defeats from their last 6 international matches. They come into this match looking to extend their consecutive winning run to 3 matches.

The Portuguese have won 3 and drawn 1 of the 4 matches between these nations on home soil. We predict another positive outcome for Portugal here from their final warm-up match before Euro 2020 begins.

Portugal vs Israel: Match preview

Portugal’s take on Israel in Lisbon on Wednesday night. The match will be Portugal’s final preparation game before their Euro 2020 campaign kicks off.

Portugal held Spain to a goalless draw in Madrid on Friday. Fernando Santos’ side are unbeaten in their last five matches and have only lost one of their previous 14 matches.

Portugal are the defending European champions, having beaten France in the Euro 2016 final. Eder was the unlikely hero in Saint-Denis that day, scoring the only goal of the game in extra time

Since then, A Seleção also went on to win the inaugural UEFA Nations League tournament, beating the Netherlands in the final in 2019.

Eran Zehavi, Manor Solomon, and Gadi Kinda were all on target in Israel’s 3-1 win over Montenegro this weekend. Israel failed to qualify for Euro 2020 after a disappointing qualifying campaign. They finished second-last in their qualifying group, behind the likes of Poland, Austria, North Macedonia, and Slovenia.

Portugal have faced Israel on six previous occasions, winning three, drawing two and losing one of those matches. The most recent meeting between the two sides – a 2014 World Cup qualifier – ended in a 1-1 draw in 2013. Ricardo Costa and Eden Ben Benat scored the goals.

Israel’s lone victory over Portugal was a 4-1 home victory in 1981.

Portugal have been drawn in Group F – considered to be the group of death – alongside Hungary, France, and Germany. Portugal’s first game of the tournament sees them travel to Budapest to face Hungary on 15 June.

Portugal team news vs Israel

Manchester-based players Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva all come into contention. The quartet missed the match against Spain due to their involvement in the Champions League final and will likely get handed some minutes.

Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to be rested against Israel. The Juventus start is six goals away from equalling Ali Daei’s record for the most international goals in the history of the game (109). Andre Silva could deputies if Ronaldo is indeed rested.

Raphael Guerreiro and Nuno Mendes will compete for one of the two full-back roles, while Pedro Goncalves is pushing for his first start.

Arsenal’s Cedric Soares was not included in the 26-man squad. Other notable ommissions include Wolves’ Pedro Neto, Everton’s Andre Gomes and Barcelona’s Francisco Trincao.

Granada goalkeeper Rui Silva is the only uncapped player in the squad.

Israel team news vs Portugal

PSV’s Eran Zahavi is the top scorer in the current squad with 26 goals.

Bibras Natkho, formerly of CSKA Moscow and Olympiacos, is the most experienced player in the squad with 76 caps to his name.

14 players in the Israel squad play their club football domestically.

Notable absentees from the current Israel setup include Celtic’s Nir Botton and former Brighton midfielder Beram Kayal.
